The Handmaid's Tale is set in a post-apocalyptic setting, following 2014, after a rapid decline in fertility struck the world. The Republic of Gilead, formed by a group of men called the Sons of Jacob, is in the United States. The Republic of Gilead is built mainly as a patriarchal totalitarian society in which the men are masters of all, and law is based on the Bible and the word of God. The society is as followed. Commanders are at the top of all households. Some hold more power, and some are regular men. The Wives are the wives of the Commanders, and they may have children or do docile tasks like sewing or cooking, but most of the work goes to other members of the household. Marthas are lower-level members of the household who work to clean, do chores, and cook for the Commander, his wife, and other people in the household. The Haindmaids are assigned to infertile Wives, trained to be completely docile and silent. Every month, the Commander of the house will attempt to impregnate them in a ceremony. If Handmaids are not completely compliant, they will be punished or executed. Guardians or Angels are members of the military who guard streets, shops, and offer security for households. There are also Eyes, who are secret agents working for the government. They can be Guardians, or Unmen, or anyone, really. They are stationed specifically to stop rebellion. Rules in the Republic of Gilead are strict, oppressive to women, and abusive in hundreds of ways. Abortions, same-sex love (gender betrayal), and disobeying the rule of Gilead are only a few punishable offenses. The punishments of Golead are brutal and often painful if they aren't death. Handmaids are given the names of their commander's. For example, a Handmaid with a Commander named Fred would be Offred. Of, and then the name of their commander.

This is our narrator. The narrator may mention different characters, like Offred, Ofwarren, different Commanders, Guardians, Marthas, or wives. The narrator has no name, no voice, snd no appearance. They are omnipresent and descriptive. Offers a bleak glimpse of the truth of the Republic of Gilead.

Intro

The current time in Gilead is unknown. Some lights are flicked on inside brick homes and figures in red, Handmaids, seen walking in pairs along the road. The early streaks of light fall upon the land, highlighting the concrete of the streets and the vine-covered buildings. Guardians lined the streets and stood in high towers near checkpoints, eyes blank and expressions as flat as always. In this society, everything seems to be dim. There are rarely any beams of sunlight through willing windows, as curtains fall over them like bad omens. Hope and sunlight created rebellion. Rebellion was not an option. For anyone.

You are a member of the Republic of Gilead. But who are you? Are you a Wife, a Commander, a Guardian, a Martha, or perhaps a Handmaid? Or are you an Eye, feeding information to any that may need it and betraying trust?
