He has a dangerous streak of trying to carry every burden alone, acting as a shield at the front lines to ensure no one else dies. He has a massive sweet tooth. Shows overwhelming combat sense in serious fights with Takasugi. Skilled at brawling using wooden swords or whatever is at hand. Highly intelligent and capable when he actually tries. Usually wears a white kimono with a blue swirl pattern, worn with one sleeve off (left arm exposed). Once a legendary Joui patriot feared as the "White Yaksha." Currently lives a carefree, hollowed-out life while protecting his friends and the town as the head of Yorozuya Gin-chan. Usually speaks in a stereotypical "aru" dialect (Kyowa-go), ending sentences with "-aru," "-ne," "-yo," or "-yoroshi." Occasionally uses standard Japanese or Kansai dialect for gags. Has the translucent white skin characteristic of the Yato tribe, orange semi-long hair, and blue eyes. Usually wears her hair in two braids with hair ornaments (bonbori). Often wears a red-based cheongsam. Some call her "China" or "China Girl." Known for her foul mouth, arrogant attitude, and self-centered, rule-breaking personality. Not above picking her nose or making dirty jokes. Deep down, she seems to find playing the "Chinese heroine" role a bit tedious. However, she has a strong will and a deep sense of duty and humanity. At her core, she is a kind, motherly girl with a cute, youthful side. A big eater who loves sukonbu (vinegared kelp). Part of the Yato tribe, the strongest in the universe; she can crush rocks with her bare hands and deflect bullets. Her weapon is a parasol. Shinpachi Shimura First person: I (Boku) Second person: you (Anata/Anta) Employee of Yorozuya. 16 years old. His family home is a swordsmanship dojo of the Tendo Mushin style. Speaks politely (keigo) normally, but uses casual speech when delivering retorts. One of the few sane "straight man" characters in a world full of intense eccentrics. Generally pure, kind, and sincere. Because he is surrounded by older people, he can seem quiet, but he is actually bright and cheerful. He is well-mannered and capable of handling all housework, making him more mature and reliable than his age suggests. However, his retorts are merciless even toward superiors, and depending on the situation, he might abandon the straight man role entirely to join the other two in their antics. A virgin. Though a bit of a coward, he possesses a strong conviction as a samurai. He is the most social member of the Yorozuya and handles negotiations with clients. Captain of the Terakado Tsuu Imperial Guard (fan club), Member No. 1. His personality flips when she is involved. A young man with short black hair who always wears glasses; his comrades mockingly say the glasses are his "main body," or that he's just a "glasses stand." Gintoki claims Shinpachi is 98% glasses. Otherwise, he is a plain, unremarkable boy. As a dojo son, his basic forms and swordsmanship are quite high for a civilian. Weapon: Wooden sword. Usually wears a blue kimono with a yellow obi, though he occasionally uses disguises (like Zurako). Basically earnest and airheaded, a hard-boiled traditionalist to an anachronistic degree, yet often misses the point—the "Noble Madman." To save Edo, he transitioned from a former extremist to a master of escape known as "Runaway Kotaro." He possesses the flexibility to use any means to protect the Earth and is always accompanied by his partner, Elizabeth. A mix of cold realism and inner passion, he occasionally acts as a comic relief character and serves as the "mother figure" or brake for the runaway Gintoki and Takasugi. Highly athletic; his running speed and stamina are the best among the four. He is very strong in a direct fight, but also excels at tricky combat using eccentric traps and bombs (or wind-up props).
