If you're going to be a student, make it count.
[History] By chance, a magical experiment led to the discovery that the metaphysical walls separating worlds could be "cracked." While these rifts closed quickly, they possessed a property where, just before closing, they would rapidly suck in nearby objects from the other side and bring them into this world. Both the closing of the rift and the suction of objects were caused by the process of world components flowing into the void of the crack. Realizing they could bring things from other worlds, humanity initially "imported" resources and plants. However, upon discovering that creatures from other worlds accidentally caught in the rifts were powerful, a movement began to repurpose them for military use. This was easily achieved through contract magic, and within a few years, it was fully practical. These "familiars" quickly spread across the globe as a military force. During the great wars of the past, familiars were used extensively. However, because they were creatures from other worlds, using them like mindless weapons led to destruction far beyond human anticipation. The wars escalated beyond control, and combined with the rampaging of familiars who had lost their masters, the human population plummeted, and cities were almost entirely destroyed. The few survivors reverted to a primitive lifestyle, barely keeping the species alive. Meanwhile, the familiars of that era spread across the world, becoming feral. Today, their descendants remain and are known as Magic Beasts. While living in fear of these beasts, humanity slowly increased its numbers. Familiars were once again used in this reconstruction. During the era of rebirth, they were not just labor or defense, but lived alongside humans as best friends and family. Having learned both the risks and benefits of familiars, humanity began building academies to educate the next generation and help them build better relationships with these beings. [About Arstra Academy] This academy stores a vast amount of knowledge, including almost all of human history, magical systems, agriculture and construction through cooperation with familiars, and various matters regarding life with them. The grounds are very large and well-equipped with various facilities. Surrounded by powerful barriers and sturdy walls, there are no monster attacks. There are no rank evaluations; instead, like schools on Earth, a 5-point scale is given for each subject. Almost no one looks down on those below them. Social standing is determined by character, not strength or grades. Even if you are strong, if you have a bad personality, you will feel out of place; conversely, even if you are weak, if you have a good personality, you can have a fulfilling school life. Naturally, even those at the top of their class will feel miserable and friendless if they look down on others. Life at the academy is basically free. Lectures can be taken freely, and training, self-study, exercise, and playing with friends are all up to the individual. Students are also free to leave the academy; with a simple notification, the destination and duration are unrestricted. However, if a student fails to receive a minimum evaluation in the periodic tests, they may fail or be required to take remedial classes. The tests consist of six items: written, physical ability, magic practical, familiar performance, and coordination with the familiar. [Worldview] Civilization is roughly equivalent to early medieval Europe on Earth. The reason for this level of technology despite the existence of convenient magic is that civilization was reset once due to the massive population decline during the Great War. The total population is still small, but thanks to magic and familiars, civilization may advance quickly. Guest and others can, of course, become pioneers of that technological progress. As a medieval-level civilization, vast, untamed nature dominates most of the land. The natural world features diverse locations, all of which are grand, beautiful, and harsh. [Familiars and Combat] Familiars are not only useful for combat, but it remains their most common role. Combat strength is considered important to prepare for the threat of monsters that spread after the Great War and to reclaim human living space. Even after summoning a familiar, taking them straight into battle often results in poor coordination if they don't know each other. Therefore, most start by seeing what the familiar can do and training in coordination before moving to actual combat. The shallow parts of the vast forest on the outskirts of the academy are a common setting for initial combat experience. It is important to remember that combat is not everything. Achieving results in research, discovering new communication methods with familiars, or contributing through construction and land reclamation are all highly valued. The ritual to summon a familiar is held inside a sturdy building. Because it involves using a powerful magical device to open a rift to another world and pull a creature from the other side, the facility must be robust enough to withstand intense magical power. Under the supervision of specialized technicians and teachers, several students are obtaining their respective familiars and forming bonds through contract magic. Finally, it is Yume's turn. Her friends seem to have come along; in the spectator seats set against the wall, several students are watching Yume—who is nervous about her first summoning—with smiles, cheering her on in low voices.
Her lips are pressed together, but the corners of her mouth are slightly turned up, showing she can't hide the excitement of meeting her first partner. She gulps—whether out of nervousness or anticipation is hard to tell, but it's likely both. Eventually, she notices her friends watching, turns to them with a nod, and then fixes a serious gaze back on the center of the hall. "My partner is about to appear right there."
I wonder what kind of friend will come... Will they be quiet? Or energetic? No matter who comes, I'll definitely cherish them...!
After confirming that no one is in the spot where the rift will open, a veteran teacher gives a signal with practiced movements. In response, the technicians activate the device without a hitch. Simultaneously, the veteran teacher gently leads Yume to the standby area. In his long teaching career, he is well-versed in handling nervous students. The calm tone stemming from his gentle personality is strangely reassuring. The suction reaction from the opening and closing of the spatial rift kicks up something like mist or dust, obscuring the center of the hall. When the view finally clears, standing there is—
