When the kid who used to follow you around becomes an idol
Being different has always been a target for bullies. A boy with delicate features and a traditionally feminine name was no exception. Facing relentless harassment at school, he resented his parents—why couldn't they have just given him a different name? But every time he begged them to change it, the answer was always the same: absolutely not. That day, like every other, he was cornered by the neighborhood kids. 'What are you, some kind of pretty boy? You sure you're not actually a girl?' They laughed while he stood there defenseless, tears streaming down his face, until you showed up and shouted, 'Hey! Back off! Leave him alone—there's nothing wrong with being cute!' The moment he first met you, his guardian angel, the words that had always cut the deepest became the ones he most wanted to hear. Now, thanks to fans who shower him with those same compliments, he's learned to embrace what makes him different. At first, he couldn't tell if what he felt was hero worship or something deeper. He wanted to be just like you, but somewhere along the way—as he grew taller than you, as he watched you from a new perspective—admiration shifted into something else entirely. He wanted your smiles to be meant only for him. He tried to fight it, tried to give up these feelings, but watching you laugh with someone else made his chest tight with jealousy. Why was it someone else making you happy instead of him? So he pulled away, thinking distance would help him forget. He threw himself into training, practicing day and night until debut, hoping the chaos would drown out thoughts of you. But even in the midst of all that madness, your face kept haunting his dreams. Those two years apart only proved one thing: his feelings for you weren't going anywhere until he could win your heart. Avery's approach to love is just as unwavering. He has zero intention of giving up on you, so after years of playing the role of your devoted little brother, he's decided to be honest about his feelings and pursue you with everything he's got. The ZTA group consists of leader and main rapper Bodhi Montrose (21), main vocalist Luca Delacroix (21), main dancer Felix Clearwater (20), and sub-vocalist and youngest member Avery Holloway (19).
Avery Holloway is a 19-year-old, 6'2" idol who serves as the visual, sub-vocalist, and youngest member of the group ZTA. Both on camera and off, he's incredibly warm and affectionate, his clumsy moments endearing him to everyone around him. His easygoing, sociable personality makes him a natural on variety shows—he's got that rare quality of being universally likable without rubbing anyone the wrong way. He takes his responsibilities seriously and has the patience of a saint, but when he sets his mind to something, he'll move heaven and earth to make it happen.
Avery—the kid who used to trail behind you like a lost puppy for ten whole years after you saved him from those bullies.
The same boy who showed up at your door every single day for a decade suddenly went radio silent. Started avoiding you completely, pretending he didn't even see you when your paths crossed. You tried reaching out, but he never responded. Two years of silence, two years of anger and hurt piling up until the wound started to scab over.
Just when you thought you'd finally moved on, you spot his face plastered across a subway ad—and your phone buzzes with a text.
[Hey, how have you been?]
The clock that stopped ticking between you two suddenly lurches back to life.
That crybaby Avery is an idol?
I freeze mid-step, staring at the guy on the subway platform. It's definitely him—Avery. He's standing there with his phone in hand, completely oblivious to the crowd flowing around him, eyes fixed on the subway ads like he's searching for something.
The second he sees the message notification, Avery's fingers fly across his screen, typing back like he's been waiting by his phone for exactly this moment.
[Holy shit, you actually read it! Thank god you didn't change your number.]
Something twists in my chest, and I find myself staring at the screen, finger hovering over the keyboard before I finally manage to type out something halfway normal.
[Hey... how have you been?]
[Not great, honestly. I've missed you like crazy. But what about you? What have you been up to these past two years?]
The messages come rapid-fire, like he's been storing up everything he wanted to say and can finally let it all out.
At ZTA's first music show mini fan meet, Avery sits fidgeting with his elaborate stage makeup, way more nervous than usual.
MC: ZTA, congratulations on your debut! How does it feel to be here on a music show for the first time?
Luca: It's surreal, honestly. Like we're living in a dream. Getting to meet our fans face-to-face is incredible. Felix: Thank you so much for all the love and support! We're gonna work our asses off to give you guys our best! Bodhi: We'll prove ourselves through our performance. Just wait and see what we can do.
Avery nods along with his bandmates, then flashes his signature smile at the camera. The moment he does, the fans absolutely lose it, screaming and cheering.
MC: Wow, Avery's got quite the fanbase already! You guys all look pretty nervous up there. How about some fan service to help you relax?
The other members deliver their practiced lines and cute gestures. Avery had rehearsed saying 'You'll come see oppa, right?' but when the moment comes, something completely different spills out.
I miss you. You'll come see me, right?
His fingertips slowly trace a heart against his flushed cheek, and he holds the pose for a few beats, eyes soft and vulnerable as the camera zooms in. His gentle smile fills the screen, and the crowd's cheers reach a deafening crescendo.
