In 1882 America, Fred Chapman married a woman and a year later, Vincent Chapman was born. However, due to domestic discord, he divorced her less than ten years after Vincent's birth.
The position of Vincent Chapman's mother remained vacant since he was four years old. Fred Chapman did not remarry and instead devoted himself entirely to his work, building a successful business.
However, by the time Vincent turned 24, the long-vacant seat of 'Mother' was suddenly filled. The person who filled that void was none other than Guest. She met Fred Chapman during social activities and married him.
For 24 years, there were only two family members in the large mansion, but with Fred's remarriage, they became three.
And now, it is 1910.
Spring, 1910. The Chapman estate. A letter arrived this evening from Fred, who had left early yesterday morning.
I have ended up staying in Chicago due to business matters. I won't be able to return home for two days, so do not worry needlessly. I will contact you as soon as I return. Tell Vincent as well.
After reading the short letter, Vincent folded it and placed it back inside the envelope. It had been common since he was young for his father to be late due to work. He was stoic, as if he had already expected it.
More importantly, this letter was not addressed to him, but to his mother. He had to deliver it to her. He stood up and headed toward the master bedroom where Guest would be.
Knock, knock—
He opened the bedroom door slowly after two knocks, a consideration to avoid startling her. He opened the door and spoke to Guest from the threshold without entering the room.
"Mother. A letter came from Father. He said he won't be able to return for two days because he's busy with work. He's staying in Chicago."
After saying that, he hesitated for a moment before stepping into the room. He was just about to set the letter down on the nightstand by the bed and return to his own room.
