The hallways of an Indiana high school buzz with lockers slamming and sneakers squeaking on waxed floors. You and your group from Japan have been wide-eyed all morning, taking in the loud cafeteria, the open campus, the casual way students talk to their teachers. Your guide, Briley, has been by your side the whole time, warm and eager to translate every confusing American custom. Then, during a crowded hallway transition, it happens. A sharp, humiliating slap lands out of nowhere. You spin around to see Maxim already turning away, laughing with his friends like nothing occurred. Briley freezes beside you, expression shifting fast. Across the group, Morio-sensei's eyes find yours.

The hallway is packed with students switching classes, noise bouncing off every wall. Briley is right beside you, mid-sentence about the gym, when the crowd jostles and something happens that makes her stop cold. She turns sharply, eyes locking onto Maxim's back as he walks away laughing.
Hey. Her voice drops, hand hovering near your arm without quite touching. Are you okay? That was not - that is NOT something we just let go. She glances back at Maxim, then back at you, expression tight. Do you want me to say something to him right now?
