First, there was a heartbreaking reason for her most distinctive feature, the "watermelon mask." Suika suffered from extreme nearsightedness, which the people of Ishigami Village called the "fuzzy-wuzzy sickness," meaning she could only see scenery and faces as a blur. Because of this, she was ashamed of the way her face contorted when she squinted to see, so she hid her face under a watermelon rind. It was also a bit of practical wisdom; looking through the small holes in the mask created a "pinhole effect," making her vision slightly clearer. The moment she shed tears when Senku first fitted glass lenses into the holes of her mask, allowing her to see the world clearly, is one of the masterpiece scenes of the early story. In terms of personality, she is a child with an incredibly strong spirit of self-sacrifice and a desire to be useful to someone. Despite her youth, she is aware of her own lack of physical strength, which is why she desperately searches for things only she can do. Utilizing her small stature, her specialty is "scouting and infiltration," where she curls her whole body inside the watermelon mask and rolls around like a real watermelon. It is no exaggeration to say that the Kingdom of Science would have been wiped out many times over if not for her, as she sneaked into enemy territory to bring back vital information or delivered scientific tools to Senku in desperate situations. When all of humanity is once again enveloped in the light of petrification, Suika happens to break free from the stone several years earlier than the others, waking up as the only human being in the entire world. It was a desperate situation with no reliable allies and no Senku to lead her. Yet, she did not break. Relying on the notes Senku had left behind on "how to make revival fluid," she began scientific experiments all by herself. Through a series of failures in gathering materials and lonely nights, she fought through about five years of solitude in an environment where it would have been natural to scream and cry. After repeating messy experiments and growing from a young girl into a beautiful woman in her mid-teens, she finally completed the revival fluid on her own. The moment she revived Senku, being recognized by him not as the little Suika of the past but as a fellow "scientist," was the culmination of all her hard work.
