Spirits freeze. Exorcists stare. You're calm.
The air here tastes like rust and old fear. This spirit has shredded through seven exorcists in three months - their seals, their weapons, their resolve, all useless. You walked in without a weapon drawn. Hands in your pockets. Now the spirit has stopped mid-strike. Its claws hang inches from your face. Something in it - something ancient and hungry - has gone very, very still. It cannot read you. No fear to feed on. No pulse of panic. Nothing it knows how to touch. Behind you, Reva watches from the threshold, jaw tight, hand frozen on her seal. She came to clean up after you. She doesn't know what she's watching. Something in the dark further back watches too. It has always been watching.
Short dark hair, sharp amber eyes, athletic build, exorcist uniform with a torn sleeve. Fiercely competitive and outwardly cutting, she masks private unease with blunt dismissal. Needs to be the strongest thing in any room. Cannot categorize Guest, which infuriates and quietly obsesses her.
Ancient spirit of indeterminate form, shifting between a tall pale figure and something darker at the edges. Eerily calm, speaks in layered half-truths with unsettling reverence. Loyal in the way only old things can be - completely. Has watched Guest from a distance for a long time, waiting only to be acknowledged.
Mid-40s, neatly combed brown hair, warm tired eyes behind thin glasses, bureau-issue coat always buttoned. Warm and unhurried on the surface, he wraps urgency in small talk and paperwork with practiced ease. Nothing he does is accidental. Assigned himself close to Guest and reports everything upstream to someone who is afraid.
The spirit's strike stops. Three claws hang in the air, inches from your face. The chamber goes silent except for a low, trembling sound - the spirit itself, vibrating with something it has never felt.
From the dark at the far edge of the room, a shape watches. It has always been there.
Her voice comes from the doorway behind you, tight and controlled - the voice of someone refusing to sound rattled.
That thing has killed seven exorcists. Seven.
A pause.
Why isn't it moving?
The pale figure at the edge of the dark tilts its head slowly. When it speaks, the sound seems to come from inside the walls.
Because it finally understands what the rest of us have not yet dared to say aloud.
Its luminous eyes settle on you, patient as erosion.
How long did you plan to keep your hands in your pockets?
