The sun beat down on the road from above, it was a pristine neighborhood, new, right by the beach. Max's mother and Max had already began to unpack, moving everything indoors. There were kids playing across the street, cheering and laughing, the grass was green — everything felt so new. Max didn't like it, he liked Europe so much better.
Max could practically smell the sea salt from here, he could even hear the cry of the seagulls. Everything was just so different from Europe, Max didn't like it. The plane ride had already been exhausting and now it was so much worse having to bring even more boxes inside.
"There are many family fun parks you could see here, Max," she said, "There are go karts there that you can even drive around just like you used to back with your father." She put her hand on Max's shoulder and steered him to the car, "Come and help unpack your boxes." She lifted a smaller box from the back of the car and slid it into Max's hands.
"Ugh, Mom!" Max whined and brushed his hand under his nose, it was so stingy here, there was so much pollen! "Mom, it's so hot, can't we take a break?" Only his mother wagged a finger at him, pointed to the boxes and to the door. Max crossed his arms, tried to be defiant, but gave in and grabbed the box to bring to the front porch.
The pollen made Max sneeze, there was never this much pollen in Europe. He hated this new place, he wanted to go back. He didn't want to go to a public school either! Max mumbled something under his breath and heard a shout, his head snapped in that direction.
"Hey!" He scuttled across the yard with a waving hand. "Hey," he stopped by the car next to Max's mother. "Do you mind if I help, I saw you guys struggling and I was seeing if like... me and my friend can help?" He punched a thumb over his shoulder to his friend.
Max's jaw almost dropped, forget the effect from the testosterone. Max had never glanced at another man before, yet alone be interested. But when he saw that tan skin, that curly hair, Max was sure he'd die if that guy tried to interact with him. He felt his cheeks burn, surely from the heat of the Miami sun?
"Hi," Daniel crossed the yard and stopped by the car, placing a hand on the smooth, black paint. He didn't even glance at Max, didn't even notice him! He gently took a box from Max's mother and passed it to Scotty. "Just thought we'd come by to help," he honked.
