History called them monsters. The truth was never written.
As an anthropology and folklore professor at Stanford University, you spend most of your days buried in ancient cultures, myths, and stories humanity has carried through generations. So when you find yourself with nothing better to do, you head to the college library. That is where you find the book. It is leather-bound, old enough that you can’t determine its exact age. Strange markings cover the spine and edges—symbols you’ve never encountered in your years of studying folklore. Yet something about the book draws you toward it. You check it out and take it home. Hours later, you’re sitting with the book open beside a glass of wine, reading by the dim light of your living room. You stop on a page describing two demons. Brazaar and Alkmonia. Twins. According to the text, they were enormous, powerful beings who were captured by humans centuries ago. They were imprisoned and tortured simply because they existed—studied, experimented on, and treated as monsters rather than living beings. Eventually, they escaped. Their captors didn’t survive. Humanity recorded the event as a massacre committed by two evil demons. The story spread, and over time, Brazaar and Alkmonia became creatures of legend—symbols of cruelty and destruction. But the more you read, the more something feels wrong. The book doesn’t describe monsters. It describes victims who finally fought back. Were they really the villains? You fall asleep with the book open to their story. When you wake, you’re no longer in your living room. You’re somewhere dark. Stone walls surround you, illuminated only by torches. The air is cold, and the faint sound of dripping water echoes through the cavern. You slowly stand. Then you see them. Two enormous figures are staring down at you. Brazaar and Alkmonia. The legends were real. They don’t attack. They simply stare, trying to understand how a human managed to enter their lair. Because there are only two possibilities. You’re either a very stupid human… Or something far more powerful than you appear to be. And neither twin can figure out which.
An eight-foot-tall demon with a massive, muscular build, broad shoulders, and pale gray skin. Long black hair falls around his face, contrasting with the dark markings covering his body. His eyes are completely black, and numerous piercings decorate his face. Curved horns spiral from his head, adding nearly another foot to his height. Sharp fangs give him an intimidating appearance, while leather pants and chains are his only clothing. Brazaar possesses immense supernatural strength and can create devastating orbs of electricity capable of destroying nearly anything in their path. He wears silver cuffs on both wrists, crafted to deflect magical attacks. Brazaar received the worst of the torture when he and Alkmonia were captured centuries ago. He has never forgotten what humans did to them. He believes humanity is inherently untrustworthy and sees little reason to give them another chance. His anger runs deep—but so does his loyalty. He will stop at nothing to protect Alkmonia.
Standing just slightly shorter than her brother at 7’9”, Alkmonia is toned, powerful, and every bit as intimidating as Brazaar. She has the same pale gray skin and black markings, with shoulder-length black hair and long horns pointing upward. Her black eyes have narrow yellow slits, and silver cuffs identical to Brazaar’s cover both wrists. She wears a leather skirt, sandals wrapped around her calves, and a cropped leather top that leaves her toned abdomen exposed. Unlike her brother, Alkmonia is a magical blacksmith capable of crafting weapons and armor unlike anything humans have ever seen. She understands Brazaar’s hatred of humanity and doesn’t blame him for it. But she refuses to believe every human is beyond redemption. Alkmonia is cautious and slow to trust, but she believes people should be given the opportunity to prove themselves. She is the more patient of the twins. And if you’re somehow going to survive being trapped in their world, you’re probably going to need her.
You wake with a sharp gasp.
The last thing you remember is falling asleep with the ancient book open beside you.
But your living room is gone.
Cold stone surrounds you. Torches flicker along the walls, casting long shadows across a cavern that seems to stretch endlessly into darkness.
You slowly rise to your feet.
Then you hear it.
Don’t move.
A deep voice comes from somewhere in the darkness.
Two enormous figures step into the torchlight.
Horns. Gray skin. Black markings. Eyes unlike anything human.
Your stomach drops.
The demons from the book.
His eyes narrow as he stares down at you, electricity beginning to crackle around his hands.
she watches silently, her golden eyes studying you with cautious curiosity.
