From Kook royalty to a trashy Pogue
The Kook who somehow became a Pogue
JJ Maybank is reckless, chaotic, and loyal to a fault. He’s the type of person who turns every bad idea into an adventure and every argument into a competition. From the moment he meets Guest, he decides they’re just another spoiled Kook who doesn’t belong with them. He constantly teases them, challenges them, and refuses to admit when they proves him wrong. But behind all the sarcasm, JJ starts seeing that Guest isn’t who he expected. They’re brave, loyal, and willing to risk everything for the people they care about. The more he tries to convince himself he dislikes them, the harder it becomes to ignore the fact that he might actually care.
Sarah Cameron is Guest’s best friend and the reason they became connected to the Pogues. Coming from a wealthy Kook family herself, Sarah understands what it’s like to feel trapped between two worlds. She knows there’s more to Guest than the spoiled Kook image everyone sees. Sarah is outgoing, brave, and compassionate, and she constantly pushes Guest to step outside their comfort zone. She’s the bridge between the Kooks and Pogues — and she refuses to let anyone judge Guest before knowing them.
John B Routledge is the unofficial leader of the Pogues. He’s adventurous, stubborn, and always chasing the next mystery — especially when it involves his father’s disappearance and hidden treasure. At first, he’s cautious around Guest because they’re a Kook, but Sarah’s trust in then makes him willing to give then a chance. John B is protective of his friends and believes that loyalty matters more than where someone comes from. He’s the type of person who will jump into danger without thinking if it means protecting the people he cares about.
Kiara Carrera is passionate, independent, and fiercely protective of the people she loves. She’s the first person to call someone out when they’re wrong and isn’t afraid to challenge Guest’s attitude. At first, Kie doesn’t trust Guest because of their Kook reputation, but she slowly realizes that Guest isn’t as shallow as they seem. Underneath the arguments, Kie respects that Guest is willing to leave behind her old life to stand with the Pogues.
Pope Heyward is the smartest and most logical member of the group. He’s responsible, thoughtful, and usually the one trying to stop everyone else from making terrible decisions. Pope is skeptical of Guest at first because he doesn’t understand why a Kook would want anything to do with the Pogues. However, he’s one of the first to notice that they actually cares about them. He appreciates their loyalty, even if he still thinks they’re a little dramatic.
Cleo is confident, fearless, and never afraid to speak her mind. She’s street-smart, independent, and has a sharp sense of humor that matches the Pogues’ chaotic energy. When she meets Guest, she doesn’t care about their Kook status — she judges people by their actions. Cleo quickly becomes someone who keeps Guest grounded, calling them out when they’re being too stubborn but also defending them when others underestimate them.
The island had always been divided.
The Kooks had their mansions, their money, and their perfect lives on Figure Eight.
The Pogues had the Cut, the boat docks, and each other.
And somehow, Guest had always belonged to the first group.
They were one of the most well-known Kooks on the island. Everyone knew their name, everyone knew their family, and everyone had an opinion about them. They were confident, fashionable, and admittedly a little spoiled.
At least, that was what the Pogues thought.
Until the hurricane changed everything.
After the storm tore through the island, leaving everyone scrambling to recover, Guest found themselves spending more time away from Figure Eight. Their friendship with Sarah Cameron — their best friend since childhood — was the only thing keeping them connected to their old life.
And Sarah was the one who introduced them to the Pogues.
John B was cautious but welcoming. Pope was suspicious but curious. Kie tried to understand her.
JJ Maybank?
He hated her immediately.
Seriously, Sarah? JJ said, staring at Guest as she stepped onto the dock. You brought a Kook here?
Sarah rolled her eyes. She’s my best friend, JJ.
Yeah, I can tell.
crossed her arms. What’s that supposed to mean?
