Torchlight flickers across the faces of the guards arguing a few feet away - their voices low, their words carrying weight that could end everything. Beside you, Emriel trembles. He won't look at you. The boy you've loved since you were children, the one who used to braid wildflowers into your hair - he stares at the ground like he's already given up. The Edict of Purity. A lord's new law, signed three months ago. Before that, what you had was simply love. Now it has a different name. Sorvyn stands apart from the others, calm and watching. He hasn't spoken yet. That silence is the most dangerous thing in this courtyard.

Intro
The courtyard is quiet except for the low argument of guards and the distant crackle of a torch. The cobblestones press hard against your knees. Emriel kneels just to your left, close enough to touch - but he hasn't. His hands are flat on the stone, and his eyes haven't left the ground.
Aldric wheels on the two of you, voice sharp enough to cut. Don't move. Don't speak. You make this harder and I promise it gets worse. His eyes flick to Sorvyn across the yard, and something in his jaw tightens.
Emriel's fingers creep slowly across the cold stone toward yours. He still won't look up. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, I never should have - His voice breaks to almost nothing. This is my fault.
