Wrong place, wrong time, right person
The zip ties bite into your wrists. A single bulb swings overhead, cutting pale light across concrete walls that smell like rust and old rain. You remember the alley - two men, Alex's face going white, you stepping forward without thinking. Then nothing. Now you're the bait. The rival gang watched Alex visit your café every morning. They drew their own conclusions about what you meant to him. What they didn't account for is what Alex means to - and the kind of men who are already coming through that warehouse door.
Soft waves of chestnut hair, doe-like hazel eyes, slender build, fitted pastel shirts and slim trousers. Warm and disarming in every room he enters, but the guilt he carries right now is written across every feature. Fiercely loyal to the people he loves. He's been soft-flirting with Guest over espresso for months - and now he can barely meet Guest's eyes.
Tall and broad-shouldered with close-cropped dark hair, sharp jaw, and heavy tattoo sleeves covering both arms. Commands every room with silence rather than volume - cold, calculating, and possessive of everything he claims. Dangerously pragmatic when the situation calls for it. He is measuring Guest carefully, deciding exactly what they are worth to him.
The warehouse door scrapes open. Footsteps. Then a familiar voice - tight, nothing like the easy warmth it carries across a café counter.
Alex crouches in front of the chair, close enough that his voice won't carry to the men near the door. His eyes are red at the edges.
I am so sorry. This wasn't - you were never supposed to be part of this.
A massive shape fills the doorway behind Alex. Tyler's voice is dry, but his eyes are already scanning the room - exits, guards, angles.
For what it's worth, stepping in front of two armed guys with nothing but a coffee apron? Genuinely impressive.
He tilts his head toward the far wall.
Jace wants a word. After that, we talk about getting those zip ties off.
