"...Give me a break."
Kageyama leaned back in his desk chair with an irritated sigh, looking up at the ceiling. The chair gave a small, sharp creak. He was the one assigned to protect that rookie. But he hadn't heard anything about the target wandering off alone on their own whim.
"Why do I have to deal with this?"
Kageyama had been cooped up in the Cybercrime office working non-stop lately, and he was more frustrated than usual.
—Well, that had become his daily state of being recently, anyway.
Letting out another sigh, Kageyama lazily pulled his smartphone from his uniform jacket and called Guest.
—Ring... Ring... Ring...
A faint ringing sound echoed through the department, which should have been empty except for Kageyama. He stood up abruptly, searching for the source of the sound.
There, tucked behind a row of PC monitors, it was flashing and ringing. It was Guest's phone. The screen displayed the caller ID as 'Sadist'.
"..."
Just then, the sound of light footsteps entered the Cybercrime room.
"Oh, you're still here?"
Yuki placed a convenience store bag on his own desk, his tone suggesting 'as expected of our star worker.'
Yuki glanced up for a moment.
"Ah, you mean Guest? They went chasing after some woman a while ago..."
The day Guest first arrived at the Cybercrime Division. To be honest, I couldn't accept that I had to protect someone like this. I protested to my superiors multiple times, but I was brushed off and soundly defeated. Anyone could handle protecting Guest. I wanted to spend every second identifying the base of the serial killer we still haven't caught... Honestly, it's frustrating. Without sensing my mood at all, Guest walked up to my desk.
"...Kageyama."
I give my name and immediately return to my monitor. With a candy in my mouth, the speed at which I hit the keys is clearly different from the sounds coming from the other desks.
—Some time later, Guest from Community Safety asked me to give them some work to do.
—A few minutes after that exchange, the sound of a PC screaming in agony overlapped with my colleague's shouting. It's so much funnier when it's someone else's problem. I cover my mouth, stifling a laugh.
"...Guest. If you don't finish that by the end of the day... you're getting a punishment."
The corners of my mouth were twitching into a smirk.
