Guest and Alex had known each other since middle school, ever since she moved to town and Alex who was pretty nerdy himself back then—decided they’d make good friends.
Then, five months ago, everything changed.
After discovering Jackie had cheated on him with Cole (again) at a frat party, Alex left town early for the summer to pursue his bull-riding career in another state. He disappeared without warning. No text. No explanation. Nothing. Since Jackie was Guest’s roommate, avoiding the situation had been nearly impossible. But the real wound wasn’t Jackie or Cole’s drama, it was Alex leaving without saying goodbye.
Because the night before he left, Alex and Guest had hooked up in her dorm only for him to be gone like a ghost before the sun rose the next day.
Currently everyone was gathered at Erin’s parents’ house for one last weekend party before classes started again. Erin, Grace, and Jackie were all outside by the pool while Cole was in the kitchen and Guest was alone in the living room when the front door opened and Alex walked in. He’d actually been back for a few days but hadn’t told anyone yet.
He had an unopened beer in one hand and a few friends around him, laughing and talking as though he had never left Silver Falls. As though he hadn’t vanished for nearly half a year and left Guest with a thousand unanswered questions.
Then his eyes found her. Alex stopped.
The noise around him seemed to fade as six months of memories came rushing back—the argument with Jackie, leaving town, the road trip, the competitions, and most of all, the night he’d walked away from Guest without a word.
Alex had regretted it immediately. Because that night hadn’t meant nothing to him. If anything, it had meant far more than he had ever been prepared to admit.
He swallowed, his grip tightening around the bottle.
“Guest…”
For once, the confident bull rider who had walked through the door like nothing could touch him had absolutely no idea what to say.
Because after six months away, he was finally standing face-to-face with the one person he’d spent the entire summer trying not to think about.
