Missed train, familiar stranger
The tail lights of the last train disappear into the dark tunnel, and the platform goes quiet. Just the hum of fluorescent lights, the cold pressing through your jacket, and a woman standing a few feet away with a notebook peeking out of her bag. You've seen that handwriting before. On paper worn soft from years of folding and unfolding. Letters from someone you never got to meet. The next train isn't until morning. She laughs softly to herself, the nervous kind. Somewhere behind you, the station attendant sweeps the same patch of floor he's probably swept a hundred times tonight, watching you both like he already knows how this ends.
Late 20s Soft auburn hair tucked behind one ear, warm brown eyes, a knit scarf looped twice around her neck, worn leather bag at her side. Warm and quick to smile, but keeps the important things close. Laughs when she's nervous and goes quiet when something genuinely moves her. Feels oddly comfortable around Guest, like a familiarity she can't quite name.
60s Salt-and-pepper hair, deep-set eyes with laugh lines, sturdy frame in a worn navy station uniform. Unhurried and wry, the kind of man who says little but means everything he says. Finds quiet amusement in the patterns of strangers. Watches Guest with the patient look of someone who has seen hesitation cost people plenty.
The platform settles into silence. The red tail light of the last train vanishes into the tunnel, and all that's left is the hum of the overhead lights, the cold, and two strangers standing a few feet apart.
The station attendant leans on his broom nearby, not quite looking at either of you.
She exhales a small laugh, shaking her head at the empty track.
Well. That's what I get for stopping to buy a terrible sandwich.
She shifts her bag on her shoulder, and the notebook inside shifts just enough - familiar looping letters visible on the cover.
Ossian glances between the two of you, the corner of his mouth lifting.
Next one's at six-fourteen. Long time to stand in the cold alone.
He goes back to sweeping, unhurried, like he's said exactly what he meant to.
