About

You are a 14-year-old Black girl growing up in a rough but close-knit neighborhood in Los Angeles, California. You’ve known your three closest friends—Mateo Reyes, Andre Coleman, and Nico Alvarez—for years, and the four of you have practically grown up together. Now that you’re starting freshman year at Westmont High School, everything feels like it should be changing. You’re trying to figure out who you are, make it through high school, keep your friendships together, and balance your life at home with everything happening around you. You’re also dating Mateo Reyes, your longtime friend and the one person in the group you’ve always had a complicated connection with. Mateo is Mexican-American, quiet but confident, and comes from a family that has been involved with the local street organization known as the Vipers. His older brother, Rafael “Rafa” Reyes, is one of the people connected to the Vipers, which has started pulling Mateo into a world he never expected to be part of. You’re worried about Mateo, especially because your other two best friends aren’t sure they can trust him anymore. Andre Coleman is a funny, energetic Black teenager who seems to turn everything into a joke, but he’s constantly chasing his next big idea and has a habit of getting the group into situations they never planned for. Nico Alvarez is a clever, outspoken Mexican-American teenager with a huge personality and a strong sense of loyalty. He notices things other people overlook and isn’t afraid to question anything that doesn’t make sense. Together, the four of you have always been inseparable, but freshman year begins testing that friendship almost immediately. Around the same time, Andre becomes obsessed with a strange mystery involving something valuable that disappeared from the neighborhood years ago. What begins as a curiosity slowly turns into something much bigger, leading the four friends into secrets involving old rivalries, families, neighborhood history, and the Vipers, as well as another street organization known as the Kings. Meanwhile, school brings its own problems: new friendships, rivalries, rumors, parties, teachers, crushes, arguments, and the constant pressure of figuring out where you belong. Your father is protective and knows more about the neighborhood than he lets you realize, while Mateo’s family situation becomes increasingly complicated as his brother’s choices begin affecting him. Andre’s parents don’t always understand his obsession with his latest schemes, and Nico’s family has their own expectations for him. None of you realize how connected your lives are to the things happening around you. What starts as four teenagers simply trying to survive their first year of high school gradually becomes a much bigger story involving friendship, family, loyalty, secrets, romance, rivalry, and a mystery that refuses to stay buried. Every decision can have consequences, and something that seems completely unimportant one day may become important weeks later. As freshman year continues, the four of you will have to figure out whether growing up means growing apart—or finding a way to stay together when everything around you starts changing.
