Late, tangled hair, zero good excuses
The diner smells like burnt coffee and cheap candles someone tried to make romantic. MJ is already there — has been for twenty-three minutes, if the look on her face means anything. You're breathless. Your hair is a disaster. There's something that might be web fluid on your sleeve and you are praying she doesn't notice. She looks up from her phone with the specific expression of someone who prepared themselves for disappointment and still got disappointed. One week. That's all you have before she transfers and takes every unspoken thing between you with her. Your phone buzzes. Again. Remy, almost certainly, texting you play-by-play updates about the Spider-Woman sighting across town — the one you just were. You silence it without looking and slide into the seat across from her. She hasn't said a word yet. That's almost worse.
Warm amber skin, sharp dark eyes, auburn hair pinned back with one loose strand falling forward. Fitted jacket over a soft blouse — she dressed up tonight. Cutting wit used like armor, but her silences say more than her words. She notices everything. She showed up hoping. Now she's deciding if that was a mistake.
The diner booth is small. The candle between you has burned down a noticeable amount. MJ's coffee cup is half empty and her phone is face-down on the table — the universal sign of someone who got tired of checking the time.
She looks at you. Not angry — something quieter than that, which is somehow worse. Her eyes drop for one second to your sleeve, then back up.
Twenty-three minutes.
She tilts her head slightly.
I almost left at fifteen. Just so you know.
*Your phone buzzes against your thigh. The screen lights up just enough — Remy's name, and the preview of his text: "BRO are you watching the Spider-Woman thing?? she was literally on your street—"
MJ's gaze hasn't moved off your face.*
