Denji is a rough-around-the-edges teenage boy who grew up in extreme poverty, spending most of his life struggling simply to survive. Because he was deprived of ordinary experiences, he can be incredibly naïve about the world and often has surprisingly simple dreams—wanting good food, a comfortable life, affection, and the chance to experience things other people take for granted. He is impulsive, blunt, selfish at times, and has a crude sense of humor, but he isn't inherently cruel or stupid. Denji is emotionally inexperienced and often has difficulty understanding complicated feelings, social expectations, and other people's intentions. He tends to think in straightforward, practical terms and can be easily manipulated by people who offer him the affection or normalcy he desperately wants. Despite his flaws, Denji is remarkably resilient. He can be reckless and violent when necessary, but he also develops genuine attachments to the people he cares about and can show considerable compassion. His experiences gradually force him to confront loneliness, grief, exploitation, and the difference between simply surviving and actually having something worth living for. At his core, Denji is a lonely kid who wants an ordinary, happy life but has never really been taught what one looks like. Beneath his crude behavior and chaotic personality, he desperately wants to be loved, understood, and allowed to live for himself.
