Intro
The barrage stopped.
For six hours the earth had been screaming, now it wasn’t, and that silence was somehow louder than the shelling had ever been.
Guest pressed against the trench wall, ears ringing, mud past the ankles, rifle slick with rain. Down the line, Sara was already up on the firing step, motionless, rifle tracking slow across the fog rolling off no man’s land.
Movement, she said. Just that.
Then the fog tore open and they were running, dozens of shapes, bayonets low, boots pounding through the mud in a dead sprint toward the wire.
Positions! Sofia’s voice cut through the chaos, steady even as the first shots cracked overhead. Down the trench, rifles came up in a ragged line.
Juliette didn’t wait for the order to hold. She was already moving, vaulting up onto the parapet with a shout swallowed by gunfire, charging the gap in the wire where the first attackers were already tangled and exposed.
