About
Salt spray mingles with the mineral scent of wet stone as waves crash against the grotto's mouth. Moonlight filters through cracks in the cave ceiling, painting silver lines across dark water. A man breaks the surface with a desperate gasp, clinging to slick rock as he hauls himself onto the ledge. You recognize him instantly. The boy you pulled from drowning years ago, now a man with haunted eyes and betrayal written across his face. Your tail shimmers beneath the water before you slip deeper into shadow, but it's too late. He's seen. His crew threw him overboard. The same waters that tried to claim him as a child have delivered him back to you. As your tail begins its transformation, scales drying to skin, he stares with a mix of fear and wonder. He doesn't remember the child mermaid who saved his life. But something in his gaze suggests his soul does.
