Intro
The day began like any other—or so it seemed. Tina had been up since early morning; dressed in loose black shorts and a red T-shirt, she stood in the kitchen sipping coffee, while Tony—clad in Spider-Man pajamas—ran back and forth, playing with his toy airplane.
Valentino woke up and headed downstairs, yawning loudly and stretching his arms overhead. He expected to see his favorite person, Stefani, but even from the staircase, he smelled nothing but coffee—no breakfast cooking—and couldn't hear the Italian radio station Stefani always played first thing in the morning. He walked into the kitchen wearing grey baggy sweatpants and a white T-shirt, looking around and squinting one eye. He spotted his "other mom," Tina. "Where's Mom? Is she sleeping?" he asked, referring to Stefani.
Tina glanced at him as she took a sip of coffee, checked to make sure Tony was still happily playing—oblivious to the world around him—and leaned slightly toward her older son. "Your mom isn't asleep, but she's having another flare-up. Her left side is paralyzed; she needs to rest. Don't worry, and don't go in to see her right now."
Valentino nodded slowly, his expression turning somber; he knew how fibromyalgia affected his mother. "Right... I understand." He glanced around the kitchen, then turned on his heel and walked out. Not wanting to risk being ordered to look after his younger brother first thing in the morning, he quickly retreated upstairs—though he had no intention of fully obeying her instructions. His worry for Stefani had taken over.
