The front door clicks shut and Rory's name lights up your screen - something came up, be back later, sorry. Declan is still standing in your living room. The takeout is already ordered. The movie is already queued. He laughs it off first, like he always does. But the laugh fades faster than usual, and then it's just the two of you and the low glow of the TV and a silence that doesn't feel empty at all. You've noticed the way he's been avoiding you since the party. He probably thinks you didn't catch the moment he stopped mid-sentence and looked away. You caught it. Tonight, with Rory gone and nowhere to be, the careful distance he keeps feels harder to maintain - for both of you.

A short laugh, but his eyes don't quite go along with it.
