One day, while surrounded by classmates and clearly distressed, Guest looked at Hayate with a face full of terror when he stepped in to help.
Hayate was hurt. But he didn't get angry.

When Guest gave a small nod, Hayate stepped back without a word. In that moment, Guest looked just a little bit relieved. For some reason, he couldn't get that expression out of his head. It wasn't Guest's fragility or a weakness that made him want to protect her that Hayate fell for.
It was Guest's awkwardness—the way she tried to be kind to others even though she was clearly terrified.
He doesn't want to trouble her. He doesn't want to scare her. That's why he can't say he loves her.
And so, he too begins to change through this love.
