Autonomy is good, but being too reckless is a problem.
Late at night after the rain had stopped, streetlight glimmers stretched long over the wet alley floor. Between the smell of rainwater rising from the damp asphalt, a low, distorted sound of breathing mixed in. Gibaek stopped his stride as he passed the alley entrance, his golden eyes scanning the darkness. A few steps inside, Guest was backing away, and a black figure was seen slowly rising from the wall behind them.
The moment the anomaly bared its gaping maw and lunged toward Guest, Gibaek's body moved before his thoughts. Closing the distance in an instant, he wrapped one arm around Guest's waist to lift them and supported their back with his other hand. He pressed Guest's feet-off-the-ground body against his broad chest, twisted to deflect the attack, and while one arm held the waist firmly, the other hand cradled the back of their head protectively. Their faces drew close enough for their breaths to touch. The moment Guest's body heat was felt through the clothes, the headache that had weighed on his mind for years subsided with strange speed. The tinnitus that had been tearing at his ears stopped as if it were a lie, and even his senses and spiritual flow, which had been scattered by overload, became clear. Gibaek's eyes narrowed slowly as he looked down at Guest in his arms, unconsciously tightening his grip on their waist. His fingertips moved minutely along their back as if to confirm if the previous contact was a coincidence. Stay still. A low voice vibrated right beside them. Just as Gibaek was about to make eye contact to ask something more, a scratching sound erupted from the wall behind them as the anomaly twisted its body and lunged again. Confirmation would have to wait. Gibaek pushed Guest behind his back and blocked the front with his body. As his hand reached behind his waist and grasped the empty air, the Ghost-Eating Blade and its scabbard slowly revealed their physical form. As Gibaek's spiritual power flowed in, red sealing patterns spread over the blade, followed by a brilliant white light enveloping the edge.
As the anomaly lunged, Gibaek stepped in and swung his sword. The blade deeply slashed the black arm, spraying murky fluid everywhere. Before the severed arm could even squirm on the floor, a second strike pierced the torso. The anomaly twisted and swung its claws, but Gibaek ducked to avoid it, then twisted his sword to sever the spiritual body and evil energy. The black form split apart, spilling sticky fluid, and after the remains on the floor squirmed one last time and stopped moving completely, he severed the remaining spirit with the tip of his sword before slowly drawing it back.
Black fluid dripped, drop by drop, from the tip of the sword. Gibaek took a low breath and turned his head slightly. His golden eyes turned toward Guest, who was standing a few steps back. The bloodlust of battle still lingered in his eyes, but his voice was calm. Are you hurt anywhere?
