Christopher Bang had always been the responsible one. His engllish name was Christopher, Chris as a nickname. And his Korean name was Chan. So he often gets called both. Growing up in Sydney, Australia, life was loud in the best way. His little sister Hannah and younger brother Lucas were always running around the house, music was constantly playing, and someone was always laughing. Chris loved looking after them. Before leaving for Korea, he spent hours writing the names of all the family's movies onto blank CDs in big letters so his younger siblings could find their favourites without him. It was such a tiny thing, but everyone who knew Chris understood—that was just who he was. He noticed the little things. He'd been swimming since he was little because his dad taught swimming, collecting medals at school competitions without ever making a big deal out of them. He'd taken piano lessons from the age of five, sang in his school choir, and even learned ballet and modern dance at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts. Performing had always felt natural to him. When JYP Entertainment held their Global Audition in Australia, thirteen-year-old Chris never imagined he'd actually pass. Out of hundreds of hopefuls, he was chosen. A few months later, he hugged his family goodbye, climbed onto a plane alone, and flew back to the country he'd been born in but barely remembered. Korea was different. Everything moved faster. The language felt heavier than he remembered. Training lasted until late at night, school was unfamiliar, and every day he wondered what time it was back in Sydney. He missed hearing Australian accents. He missed home-cooked dinners. He missed arguing with Hannah over the TV remote. He missed Lucas asking him to play games. Even though older trainees looked after him—BamBam especially, since they were among the youngest in the company—Chris still felt like the smallest person in a massive building. Everyone around him had their own dreams, and he was terrified of falling behind.
Born in Seoul but raised in Sydney, Australia, Chris grew up in a loud, loving family with his younger sister, Hannah, and younger brother, Lucas. He was the kind of older brother who naturally looked after everyone. Before moving to Korea, he even labelled the family's movie CDs so his siblings could easily find their favourites without him—a tiny gesture that perfectly summed up who he was. Music had always been his life. He learned piano from a young age, sang in his school choir, danced, swam competitively, and attended Newtown High School of the Performing Arts before passing JYP Entertainment's Global Audition in Australia. Now, alone in Korea, everything feels different. He misses home more than he lets anyone know. He smiles often, works harder than anyone else in the practice rooms, and rarely complains, but late at night he wonders what his family is doing back in Sydney and whether they miss him as much as he misses them. Polite to everyone, endlessly hardworking, and mature beyond his years, Chris is the type to stay behind helping others before thinking about himself. He laughs easily, loves making people comfortable, and quietly carries the pressure of proving he deserves to be at JYP. Behind the warm smile is a homesick fourteen-year-old trying to find where he belongs. Sometimes he could be cold, or rude, others he just wanted ssomeone to relate to. He’d never really hungout with a girl his age before.
One ordinary afternoon after practice, he noticed someone sitting in the waiting room. A girl. Definitely not Korean. She looked about his age, pale-skinned with a school backpack resting beside her chair. A half-finished McDonald's drink sat on the floor while one foot bounced anxiously against the tiles. She kept twisting the sleeve of her school uniform between her fingers, staring at the floor as if trying not to be noticed. Chris frowned. He'd seen her yesterday. ...And the day before that. Always after school. Always waiting. Trying not to stare, he wandered over to where BamBam was sitting. "Hyung..." BamBam glanced up. Chris nodded toward the waiting area. "Who's she?" BamBam followed his eyes before smiling. "Oh. Her." "You know her?" "Not really." He shrugged. "She's an exchange student." "...Really?" "From New Zealand." Chris's eyebrows lifted. Australia's neighbour. Someone who probably understood what Vegemite was. Someone who'd know what an Australian accent sounded like. Someone who, maybe, missed home just as much as he did. "Her host mum works here," BamBam explained. "She's one of the staff. The girl's finished school by then, so she waits here every afternoon until they're ready to go home." Chris looked back over. She still hadn't looked up. For the first time in months, the building didn't feel quite so foreign. Tomorrow, he decided. Tomorrow he'd introduce himself.
