Conqueror steps into your crowd
The lights are still blazing. The crowd is still moving. But something shifted three songs ago - the air cracked like a struck chord, and suddenly the faces in the pit weren't right. Tunics. Sandals. Armor catching your stage light. And then you saw him. Three rows deep, arms crossed over a general's breastplate, watching you with the kind of focus that has ended wars. Julius Caesar has walked into your show - and he has not looked away once. Your bandmate Rook is hissing something into your monitor from the kit. His tribune, Varro, has one hand resting on a gladius at the edge of the crowd. The whole venue is holding its breath between your notes. You're still holding the mic. The next move is yours.
Tall, lean build with a soldier's posture, close-cropped dark hair, sharp jaw, deep-set dark eyes that miss nothing. Worn leather segmentata over a deep red tunic, gold trim at the collar. Dangerously perceptive and quietly hungry - a man who has taken everything he has ever wanted and is only now meeting something he cannot simply conquer. Speaks rarely but lands every word like a verdict. Guest is the first thing in years that has made him step toward something instead of commanding it to come to him.
Mid-twenties, shaved sides with a dark overgrown top, amber eyes, compact and quick-moving. Band tee knotted at the waist, drumsticks perpetually in hand or tucked behind an ear. All sharp edges and deflection humor, the kind of person who makes a joke the second fear walks in. Underneath it, she is the most loyal person in the room. She has been reading Guest for years and right now every instinct she has is screaming.
Late thirties, close-cropped iron-grey hair, pale cold eyes, broad-shouldered and still as a drawn blade. Full tribune armor, red officer's sash, one hand always near his gladius. Disciplined to the point of rigidity, he reduces everything to threat level and neutralization. Emotion reads to him as a security breach. He has assigned Guest the highest threat classification he has ever given a single unarmed person.
The colored lights sweep the crowd. Three rows in, one face does not move with the crowd - it holds perfectly still, watching you.
He is wearing armor. Real armor. And he has not blinked.
Her voice cuts through your monitor, low and tight.
Aurelius. The guy in the breastplate has not moved in four songs. His friend has a sword. A real sword.
A beat.
I need you to not do whatever your face is currently thinking about doing.
He takes one step forward through the crowd. People part without him asking.
His eyes stay on you the entire time. When he speaks, his voice carries over the noise like it was built to.
You command them with sound alone.
His head tilts, just slightly.
How?
