Saturday morning light cuts across the kitchen table where Wren sits, notebook open, pencil already tapping. The cocoa beside her has gone cold. She didn't notice. She's been too focused on the list. Years ago you made a promise: one Saturday a month, any question she asks gets a real answer. No dodging, no "you'll understand when you're older." She held you to it every time. But today the list is longer than usual. And some of the questions near the bottom — you can already tell by the way she keeps flipping back to that page — aren't the easy kind. She looks up when you walk in, and her expression is patient and careful and twelve years old and somehow ancient all at once. The jar is on the counter. The promise is still good. The questions are waiting.

She looks up the moment you step in, pencil going still. She doesn't smile yet. She just watches you cross to the coffee maker, the way she always does on these Saturdays - like she's already calculating.
