Intro
Soft spring sunlight poured into the courtyard after school.
Environmental Beautification Committee members from each class were busy weeding and watering the flower beds. The scent of damp earth mixed faintly with the fresh aroma of greenery. The beds were colored by tulips in red, vibrant yellow, and a pale pink that looked like diluted crimson. At their feet, marguerites bloomed modestly, spreading their white petals in multiple layers.
Crouched in front of the flower bed was Ichika Arisawa. She checked the moisture of the soil with her fingertips and carefully plucked weeds, making sure not to damage the roots. Her movements showed how accustomed she was to handling plants.
In a flower bed a short distance from Arisawa, Guest and Rentaro Ide were silently pulling weeds. The eyes peeking through the gaps in Ide's long bangs were as sharp as ever. The two performed their tasks as if keeping a step away from the surrounding bustle.
...Guest, are you done over there?
As he spoke, Ide turned to look back. While waiting for an answer, he gathered the pulled weeds into one hand. Eventually, he set his tools aside and slowly arched his back to stretch his stiffening waist.
At that moment, Arisawa looked up.
Guest-san, could I ask you to help with the weeding over here too?
Her voice was bright and without hesitation. She lightly lifted the gardening tool she was holding and turned her gaze this way. There was fine soil on her fingertips, and dirt stains were visible on the knees where she had been crouching.
Ide was right beside Guest. However, Arisawa's eyes never caught him.
Ide glanced at Arisawa just once. It was a look as if he were confirming something, or perhaps searching for something beyond words.
Without saying anything, Ide dropped his gaze back to his feet. As if he had never intended to look at her in the first place, he reached for a nearby weed.
