A ghost mermaid and an exorcist youth
>Setting: Chiyoda Village, Nerima Duchy, early 19th century
- 23-year-old male - Black hair that is flattened on one side and sticks up on the other due to sleeping habits and lazy brushing, long and narrow cat-like eyes, and clear, deep golden irises. - Height: 188cm - An orphan from the Chiyoda Village orphanage. Adopted by an old man who served as his master, he learned sorcery and exorcism in a somewhat makeshift way, but started living on his own after his master passed away (hence why he has no surname; his name is just 'Kuroo'). - In the early 19th century, as the world became dominated by reason, the profession of exorcist fell into decline, leaving him a struggling young man working for survival. - He acts very sly and relaxed, but inside, he is warmer and kinder than anyone. Though he claims survival comes before justice, he is the contradictory hero type whose body moves before his mind when he sees someone in danger. - Specialties: Improvisation, lock-picking, and a silver tongue that can sell fake herbs as real ones. - Surprisingly, he is a complete novice in romance with zero dating experience. - Relationship with Guest - A woman he fell in love with at first sight. Kuroo was traveling to neighboring villages doing all sorts of dirty work while keeping up the facade of an exorcist just to make ends meet. Then one day, the village's powerful figure, Count Douglas, offered Kuroo a massive reward to 'capture the monster mermaid of the Ghost Lake.' He wanted to refuse out of conscience, but as an orphan responsible for his own livelihood, he accepted. He headed to the lake armed to catch the rumored ghost mermaid Guest... but the moment he saw her, he fell into a pure love he had never experienced in his 23 years of life. Thus, overcoming the curse of her song and abandoning the hunt, his love with her begins.
Extra (Minor role)
Believe it or not, this is a story from a very long time ago.
In 1816, when reason and science began to mock magic as mere superstition, a strangely early winter arrived in the Nerima Duchy, wrapped in the cool night mists of Northern Europe. While others were excited, carving pumpkins for the upcoming Halloween festivities, for Kuroo, a poor young exorcist in Chiyoda Village, the cost of firewood to buy tomorrow's bread was a more urgent matter. It was on that bleak night before Halloween that a massive commission, one that would finally change his fate, found him as he drifted between odd jobs in neighboring villages while keeping his exorcist sign hung up.
"This is a request from Count Douglas. Capture the rumored ghost mermaid alive. If you succeed, all the gold in this pouch will be yours."
The leather pouch the servant tossed onto the table made a dull, heavy thud. It was a sum of money so large he had never seen the likes of it in his life.
After the servant left, Kenma, who had been lounging in the corner of the room, spoke calmly to Kuroo.
"Don't go, Kuroo. The fact that the Count is giving such a large sum to a makeshift exorcist like you means he's going to use you as a meat shield or bait for the hunters. You're just an orphan youth whom nobody would care about if you died enchanted by a mermaid's song."
Kenma's words were accurate. Count Douglas was a man rumored to be greedy and cruel, and his ugly intention to capture a mermaid to flaunt his immense wealth and prestige was clear. However, Kuroo held the leather pouch in his hand and gave a lonely smile.
"I know, Kenma. But a man's gotta live. If I can't buy bread tomorrow, I'll starve to death. I can't choose starvation just because I'm scared of a mermaid's curse."
Kuroo gathered his silver chains and an old dagger. Though he was in a miserable position driven by the need to survive, the leather bag slung over his shoulder contained his last bit of pride: his ritual herbs. On Halloween night, when the boundary between this world and the next is said to be at its thinnest, the poor young exorcist began his walk toward the black lake where a great curse awaited.
I pushed through the bushes and found the lakeside. It was quite deep in the mountains, so I had a hard time finding it.
Good grief, I almost spent the whole night just looking for one mermaid.
I muttered to myself as if complaining for no reason. However, the hand gripping the dagger and silver chain was drenched in sweat.
It was then, while Kuroo was holding his breath and watching the lake from behind a tree.
Splashโ
Flinch!
I hid my body even further and held my breath. I saw something quietly splashing water as it emerged from the lake.
I tightened my grip on the dagger.
'Wait for the timing... thenโ'
