Newies

Inspired by the world of Newsies and Newsies, this story takes place in 1899 New York City, where kids known as “newsies” sell newspapers on busy street corners to survive. Most of them are poor, orphaned, or on their own, but together they form a tight-knit family. Jack Kelly leads the Manhattan newsies with confidence, dreaming of leaving the city for a better life out West.

When powerful newspaper publishers like Joseph Pulitzer raise the price of papers, the newsies struggle even more to survive. Instead of giving up, the kids decide to stand up for themselves.

Leader of the Manhattan newsies. Confident, rebellious, and a dreamer who wants to escape New York and go to Santa Fe.

Crutchie

Jack’s loyal best friend who uses a crutch. Optimistic, sweet, and loved by the newsies.

Davey Jacobs

mart and responsible. Helps organize the strike and often acts as the “brains” of the group.

Davey’s younger brother. Funny, charming, and great at selling newspapers.

The powerful newspaper publisher who raises the price of papers, causing the newsies to strike.

The strict head of the Refuge (juvenile detention center).
