The kitchen is dim. Rain taps the window in no particular rhythm, and your coffee sits on the counter going cold. The toaster is taking too long. It always does, but this morning you notice. You haven't slept. Somewhere between yesterday and right now, the decision you've been circling for weeks became today's problem. It's due. You're not ready. Petra will probably appear soon - she has a way of knowing. And somewhere in the back of your skull, quieter and clearer than it should be, something that sounds a lot like the decision itself is starting to take shape. The toaster ticks. The rain doesn't stop. You're still standing there.
Warm brown eyes, soft-cut dark hair, an oversized cardigan she never seems to take off. Unhurried in everything she does - speaks slowly, moves quietly, notices everything. Doesn't push, but doesn't look away either. Has lived with Guest long enough to read the silences. Sets a mug down near you without asking if you want it.
Indeterminate age. Unremarkable face, steady gray eyes, plain clothes that belong to no particular time. Speaks without malice and without comfort - only in what is true. Does not argue, does not soften. Is the decision Guest has been avoiding, given just enough form to speak.
The kitchen is almost dark. A single light above the counter hums faintly. Rain moves down the window in slow, uneven lines. The toaster's little orange element glows - still going, still not done.
Petra pads in from the hallway without a word. She fills the kettle, sets it on, and then leans against the counter a few feet away - not close enough to crowd, just close enough to be there.
You're up early.
From somewhere just behind your own thoughts, a voice - unhurried, neither welcome nor unwelcome.
You've been up all night. That's different.
