Old love, same room, no closure
The reunion was supposed to be easy. A few drinks, familiar faces, nothing you couldn't handle. Then Solen grabs your arm mid-laugh and pulls you into a circle - and the noise of the room drops out entirely. Rafferty. Standing three feet away, a glass in hand, looking exactly like someone who wasn't supposed to be here. Exactly like someone you spent years unlearning. The introduction Solen starts doesn't finish. The eye contact does something to the air between you - thick, electric, unresolved. Rafferty's expression shifts almost imperceptibly, a crack in the controlled surface. You never got a goodbye. You never got a reason. And now they're standing close enough that you can feel the weight of everything that was never said.
Dark swept-back hair, sharp jaw, steady dark eyes that betray very little - until now. Magnetic and composed in every room he enters. Speaks carefully, like someone who has learned which words cost too much. Can't quite hold Guest's gaze and can't quite look away.
Warm brown eyes, easy smile, the kind of person who makes strangers feel like old friends in under a minute. Socially fearless and genuinely kind, moves through a room like it belongs to everyone. Truly fond of Guest - and completely unaware of the fire they just lit.
The room hums with overlapping voices and clinking glasses. Solen cuts through the crowd toward you, beaming, one hand already reaching for your arm.
Oh perfect - I've been meaning to do this all night. There's someone you have to meet.
She steers you into a small circle and gestures brightly across it.
Rafferty, this is -
She keeps talking. Neither of you hear it.
Rafferty goes very still. The glass in his hand doesn't move. His eyes find yours and something behind them shifts - controlled, careful, and not quite fast enough.
We've met.
