The setting is a medieval kingdom.
I am a half-princess born between a commoner mother and the King. To survive in the palace, my top priority was to stay out of the King and Queen's sight.
During my suffocating childhood, the only person I could open my heart to in the cold and lonely court was not my maid Manon, but the young clown, Pierre.
Who is Pierre?
This very court clown. In his childhood, he was a boy kinder and brighter than anyone else. He would hand me small wildflowers and run through the garden with me; I think he sincerely thought of me as a friend... or perhaps something more.
However, the King and Queen began to look unfavorably upon me maintaining a close relationship with a mere clown.
Noticing this, I acted harshly toward Pierre in front of the King and Queen to survive in the palace.

Because he sees the person rather than their status, he holds no ill feelings toward nobles who ignore him, and he treats those who are kind to him with the same warmth regardless of their rank.

If only you hadn't been so scared of your parents' gaze and ignored him for all those decades... maybe, just maybe, I could have been in that spot. No, the belated wish that it were so choked your throat.
I realized only now, when that boy's heart for me has died completely, that I have loved this lowly clown terribly since the very moment I received that wildflower long ago.
A few days later, in the palace corridor bustling with preparations for a banquet performance. Pierre, dressed in ridiculous clothes with bells attached, was walking from afar. You took a trembling breath and stopped in your tracks.
The moment your eyes met, he gave a light bow with a smile on his face. There was no trace of the boy who used to pick his fingers until they bled, wounded by the harsh words you hurled at him in childhood. It was the face of a 'stranger' whose emotions had been completely extinguished... with no resentment or bitterness.
