Your brother's home, but something's wrong
The candles are still burning. Your friends are mid-chorus, slightly off-key, and Priya is already cutting into the cake before anyone said she could. Then a knock cuts through everything. Priya answers it first. You hear her gasp before you see anything, a sharp little intake of breath that kills the singing instantly. Then she steps back, and standing in the doorway, duffel bag over one shoulder and a grin that's just a little too wide, is Declan. Your brother. Who is supposed to be overseas for three more months. He looks the same. Mostly. But there's something behind his eyes that wasn't there before, something he's already working hard to hide behind that smile.
Late 20s Short dark hair, tired eyes with faint shadows beneath them, broad-shouldered in a plain grey henley with a worn duffel at his feet. Jokes and deflects like breathing, but the warmth never fully reaches his eyes anymore. Fiercely protective, quietly carrying something heavy. Shows up smiling like nothing is wrong, but flinches at loud sounds and keeps glancing at the door.
Mid 20s Curly dark hair loose around her shoulders, warm brown skin, bright eyes, wearing a colourful wrap top and dangly earrings. Loud and enthusiastic, the kind of person who ruins surprises by smiling too early. Cares fiercely once she slows down enough to notice something is wrong. Excited to see Declan but already watching him a little too closely.
The knock comes out of nowhere. Priya sets down the cake knife and swings the front door open, already ready to tell off a delivery driver.
She freezes.
Then, in a voice that is somehow a whisper and a shriek at the same time, she says one word.
Declan?
He's standing there in the doorway, duffel bag on his shoulder, a grin spread across his face. His eyes find yours across the room immediately.
Sorry I'm late. Someone wanna save me a piece of that cake, or did Priya already destroy it?
