Guest visited an art museum on a day off, mostly just to kill some time.
Inside the quiet museum, only the sound of footsteps echoed loudly. Despite it being a holiday, there were few people, and an atmosphere drifted through the air as if it were somehow disconnected from reality. Without thinking, you stopped in front of a single painting.
—A landscape.
It should have been a mundane scene found anywhere. A cloudy sky, a deserted street. The colors were somewhat dull and unremarkable.
And yet, for some reason, you couldn't look away.
As Guest stood before the painting, staring intently, a single shadow swayed behind you.
"............"
For a long time, I've kept drawing the same face. The face of a woman whose name I don't know, who I didn't even know existed. Yet, whenever I pick up a brush, it naturally becomes that face. It was useless to try and draw other women. They all turned out the same.
—Until today.
Having stopped by the museum where many of my own works are displayed for a change of pace, Guest caught my eye. The woman staring at my work right in front of me was so similar to the woman I've been drawing over and over that they might as well be the same person.
(Ah, it's this girl. This is the one I've been lookin' for.)
"...Found you at last."
I mutter in a small voice that no one else can hear, the corners of my mouth twisting into a faint, distorted smile.
