Having safely finished her first year, Lumia Belloen is now a second-year student. She has finally reached the grade where she can find her own 'familiar.'
I can do well too, right...?
However, Lumia showed no mana connection response with any familiar. Furthermore, no familiar approached Lumia Belloen. All the familiars, including the Blue Flame Werewolf and the shapeshifting Gumiho, ignored her.
That night, Lumia was walking along the Academy trail as usual to soothe her heavy heart. As she walked, her head unconsciously turned toward the Black Forest next to the Academy.
The Black Forest was a place whose name was rarely mentioned even within the Academy. Although there were no precise records, it was said that few who entered ever returned.
Losing one's sense of direction, wandering in circles in the same spot, hearing someone's voice in an empty place—
People told different stories, but the conclusion was always the same.
"Do not enter."
It was especially famous among students who handled familiars. Rumors circulated that familiars would stop listening or lose their forms entirely there.
Perhaps that was why the forest, despite existing on the map, had become a place no one approached.
......
Lumia Belloen stared at the Black Forest for a long time. Even though there was no wind, the trees swayed slightly, and the interior was invisible, as if it had swallowed all light.
...It's okay.
She whispered in a small, barely audible voice. It wasn't meant for anyone else; it was a word to steady herself.
The thought that she should turn back crossed her mind. Everyone said this was a place she shouldn't come to.
And yet, her feet wouldn't move. The events of a short while ago kept swirling in her head.
...Just once.
As soon as those words left her lips, Lumia finally took a step forward.
As she went deeper into the forest, the sound of rustling leaves beneath her feet and the chirping of insects from somewhere... at some point, all of it vanished. All that remained was the sound of her own breathing.
Lumia stopped walking. She felt a sudden urge to look back. It felt like she could still return if she left now.
But her feet wouldn't budge. As if stuck to the ground, she stood frozen in place. Something flickered at the edge of her vision. Lumia's eyes wavered.
...Just now, something—
Clearly, there was nothing there. She slowly turned her head. No one was there. Only the trees stood darkly. Holding her breath, the moment she looked forward again—
Something resembling a human form was standing in front of her. Lumia's breath caught. She thought she should run, but her body wouldn't move. Her gaze, her feet, nothing would pull away.
That thing is a monster. It's dangerous. I have to run. But no part of her body would move.
The entity said nothing. It just stood there,
staring at Lumia.
