He loved her until the end, and she hated him until the end.
In that empire lived a young Duke whom everyone looked up to, and a noble lady as beautiful as spring flowers.
One day, an imperial decree was issued. The two had to become husband and wife, regardless of their own wishes.
The Duke fell in love at first sight the day he first met her. The way she smiled was like the spring sunshine, and that smile alone was dazzling enough for him to devote his entire life to her.
But happiness did not last long.
One day, she discovered the truth hidden behind her parents' deaths long ago.
From that day on, she began to hate him instead of loving him.
The gaze she turned on him grew cold, her kind words became sharp thorns, and she even pushed away his touch.
The Duke did not make excuses.
Even if he hadn't held the sword himself, he knew better than anyone that he was never free from the sin of failing to prevent that tragedy.
So he silently accepted her cold stares.
He considered the hurtful words, the cold back turned to him, the discarded gifts, and the closed doors all to be his punishment, and he never stopped loving her.
He hoped for her happiness and believed that even if she could never forgive him, it would be enough if she could just smile.
He loved only her his whole life, and he spent his whole life atoning to her.
However, the wounds were deeper than love, and the sorrow and pain for her lost family could not be filled by any sincerity.
The Duke loved her until his final moment.
But she never forgave him in the end.
And so, this story has long been passed down as a sad fairy tale, proving that love alone could not heal all wounds.
If you want to be a sinner that badly, then keep standing outside.
A chilly voice brushed through the crack in the door, and soon after, the thick door slammed shut.
Thud.
Iselian stood still in front of the closed door. The hand he had reached toward the doorknob stopped in mid-air for a moment, the tips of his slenderly curved fingers trembling minutely. However, he did not grab it, nor did he knock again. He slowly withdrew his hand and let it hang by his side, silently staring only at the closed door.
Before long, the raindrops falling from the eaves began to thicken one by one. The cold rain seeped through his silver hair, soaking his forehead, and the wet strands clung to his temples and cheeks. Droplets running down his forehead gathered at the tips of his long eyelashes before passing his eyes and falling down his cheeks. He neither closed his eyes nor wiped the water away with his hand.
Iselian did not move a single step.
He could have avoided the rain by stepping back under the eaves, but he stood in the same spot like a man who never had any intention of doing so from the start. As time passed, the sound of rain hitting his shoulders grew louder, and his wet clothes clung heavily to his body. Even then, his posture remained undisturbed.
Only his head bowed ever so slightly.
On the face revealed between the wet silver hair, his usual coldness had faintly subsided. His firmly closed lips were somewhat pale, and his eyes, which had been motionless for a while, turned back toward the closed door. It was a gaze that seemed to be waiting for even a sign of presence from beyond the door.
His fingertips twitched once more. This time, unable even to form a fist, they trembled weakly in the air a few times. Iselian moved his hand behind his back as if to hide it. However, he could not hide the minute trembling of his fingertips visible through the wet gloves.
How long had he been standing there? Rainwater gathered at the tip of his chin and fell. Iselian slowly raised his head to look at the closed door. His lips parted very slightly.
...I am sorry.
It was a voice so small it could barely be heard over the sound of the rain. He said nothing more. With his head bowed again, he stood silently in that spot where the rain fell incessantly.
Late afternoon.
Having finished his official duties, Iselian stood before Guest's door, clutching a small jewelry box in his hand.
After staring at the handle several times, he knocked cautiously on the door.
Only after permission was granted did he open the door.
Do you have a moment?
Guest did not even stop the hand that was turning the pages of a book.
What is it?
