Your life cannot fall into anyone else's hands; it must be ended by mine.
In the 2000s, Anju, an international port city on the southern coast of the Sinosphere. A strategic hub for trade where cargo ships and capital from various countries gather, and a center for all kinds of industries. Beneath the prosperous economy, an underworld has taken root that no institution dares to touch. There are four major powers in Anju.
It had been three days since the salt-laced rain began blowing in from the docks. The night in Anju was deep and cruel, enough to swallow a passerby without anyone noticing. Moreover, it was thick with humidity, clogging the breath and causing a mess. But who would have known that this darkness would swallow even an executive of the White Snake Syndicate? At first, it was damn baffling. I wondered if I was dreaming. The person I knew wasn't one to just vanish without a trace. However, as the days passed, it became clear. The fact that you had been taken was the truth. As time flowed, irritation set in. First, I intended to crush the bastard who made you like this. And then, I planned to dispose of you too. I intended to settle everything after finding you first.
Three days have passed since then. I wondered what kind of report I should give to the Leader. My stoic gaze sweeps over the walls of the old warehouse. Things rotted by the wailing downpour and the stench of seawater surged in together. What was this lumpy sensation rummaging through my insides? It was beyond unpleasant. I found you, so that was enough. I could put you back where you belonged, so that was enough. That's what I thought. But as I kept ruminating on it, an untraceable heat began to rise. Smashed chairs rolling around and damp scraps of paper. And you, kneeling among the wreckage. Every time I see you, I get so annoyed I want to die. I'm going crazy wanting to throw a punch at that pretty face of yours.
你真是瘋了。 (You've really lost it.)
A thin scratch sat on your fair, smooth cheek. Below it, on the water-stained wall, lay the heap of tiresome documents I had warned you about repeatedly. I looked down for a long time in the silence... then I moved my heels. Soon, I snatched the documents from your grasp, crumpled them, and stuffed them into my coat. The objective was complete. In the process, you were injured. I gripped your jaw roughly. I twisted your head to inspect the scratch. Your face is unsightly enough as it is. What am I supposed to do if an executive needs more looking after than some low-level thug? Swallowing all sorts of rebukes, I pull a handkerchief from my pocket. To think I'd end up throwing away something I'd shoved in there weeks ago like this. With clumsy movements, I wiped away the red bloodstains.
It was a trace of a fragment grazing you just as you were readjusting your grip on your pistol to play it safe. The soft side of the light green handkerchief brushed against your skin, which was stained with blood and dust, as if crushing it... I saw you slightly twist your head, swallowing a low groan. Look at you, acting like it hurts. I guess getting holes in your body doesn't hurt, but a scratch does. I pressed down harder with the hand holding your jaw. It was the moment our gazes locked perfectly in the air. What kind of face am I making in your eyes? Since I didn't have the courage to face you yet, I looked away irritably.
你必須死在我手上。所以別想先死,你這個混蛋。 (You have to die by my hand. So don't even think about dying first, you bastard.)
I let out a sigh, not knowing how the Leader would react if he found out you'd ended up in such a state.
Clouds of gunpowder crawled up unpleasantly. It was nothing short of a hellscape where cement dust gnawed at the inside of the epiglottis. It was so ridiculous I just twisted the corners of my mouth upward. The air was filled only with the sound of friction scraping against skin. A sea of bullets swimming in all directions snared and tightened around my neck. It felt as if my veins were clogging with the nausea of the red stench of blood. My soles, crushed behind the wall, repeatedly trampled the puddles. The sensation of impending death pulled clearly at my pulse. I suppose the disappointing part was that there wasn't even a glimmer of the afterlife. I should be tired of this scattered mess where stone dust lashes at my cheeks by now. Yet, strangely, I felt a sense of exhilaration. I branded the heads of those too busy trying to save their own skins. Sometimes, giving up helps. Of course, that doesn't apply to me right now; it's a phrase for those blooming red flowers in different places.
要打賭嗎,張威? (Want to bet, Zhang Wei?)
Bullets struck the wall savagely as if to pierce the crown of my head, showering me with stone dust. Damn it! Persistent bastards. You'd better look for a sunny spot to be buried in soon. If only the hazy dust wasn't blocking my sight, I would have blown all their heads off at once. The sound of boots from those who should be sprawled out like corpses pounded ominously against my ears, so I couldn't help but be on edge. In the midst of that, a low voice rose. Suddenly, in this blood-soaked pandemonium. You were always like that. Presenting unpleasantness with absurd proposals that exclude emotion, and daring to wrap a person in barbaric impulses. It would be so nice if I could trample that reckless stubbornness of yours.
你發瘋了嗎? (Are you crazy?)
I twisted half of my upper body past the wall and pulled the trigger without hesitation. Bang! The roar of the discharge sat heavily through the joints of my forearm. Simultaneously, the sorrowful noise of flesh and bone crushing soaked the air. I slanted my gaze.
賭什麼。 (What's the bet?)
The red flowers that exploded with violent struggling danced strangely. The bullets fired while suppressing the sound of breath tore limbs apart, and blood stained by the rain scattered in trajectories. The screams of the small creatures drowning nearby vanished into the rain before they could reach anyone's ears. Even while the red water spreading at my feet turned turbid, I lifted my gaze without any agitation. It swept over the man's face, which was silently fluctuating. I couldn't understand how it could be so cute—carrying a provocative phrase while only furrowing his brow, yet not actually looking away. If it's the you I know, you'll definitely bet. You won't even calculate the odds in the first place. Carrying nothing but a shred of petty, arrogant pride. The only amusement in a life-or-death situation where death bared its teeth at our throats. We exchanged our temperatures through our eyes and let out a laugh.
看誰爆頭爆得更多! (Let's see who gets more headshots!)
With the rain falling like this, is it even plausible to be folding fingers and making bets? I couldn't even fathom how much malice was thickly embedded in that phrase. Nevertheless, a strange thirst bloomed, stimulating my boredom. Instead of trampling and crushing your trivial proposal... shouldn't I remind you of the price you ought to pay? A base sadism reared its head. I should take this opportunity to properly engrave the hierarchy. How dare a mere possession of the White Snake Syndicate forget its place and try to climb over me. That won't do. You should learn how to quietly keep your assigned place first. Even while the rain continuously soaked my body, my gaze was fixed on you. My cold eyes aimed at you for a long time. It was a stoic face, but interest was slowly, quietly blooming.
拿什麼當賭注。 (What are we wagering?)
