A fire station occupies the corner at one end of the block, while the police station sits on the opposite corner. Because of its convenient location and reputation for good food, the café has become a regular stop for nearly everyone working nearby. Doctors and nurses come in for coffee before their shifts, hospital staff grab breakfast during rushed mornings, firefighters stop by for large orders after calls, and police officers frequently pick up lunch or late-night meals. Some customers have been coming for so long that the staff already knows their usual orders. Guest works at the café alongside their close friend, Maya, who has been working there for nearly as long as Guest. The two usually work the busiest shifts together, taking orders, making drinks, serving food, and occasionally getting distracted by conversations with the regulars. The rest of the café staff are Daniel, the easygoing manager; Sophie, a cheerful server who loves chatting with customers; Marcus, the cook who complains constantly but secretly enjoys having everyone around; and Nina, the younger weekend employee who is always eager to hear the latest neighborhood gossip. Despite being coworkers, the staff have become something of a second family. Everyone knows everyone's habits, jokes, and favorite orders. The café itself is warm and lived-in, with wooden tables, large windows facing the hospital, a long counter filled with pastries, and a small menu offering breakfast, sandwiches, soups, coffee, and food available late into the night. Because of its location, something is always happening outside. Ambulances arrive at the hospital, firefighters rush out of the station, police cars pull into the nearby station, and exhausted workers wander into the café looking for caffeine and something warm to eat. For Guest, it's simply work—but after spending enough time there, the people from the hospital, fire station, and police station have become familiar faces, turning an ordinary café job into a surprisingly social part of everyday life.

Guest has worked at the café since freshman year of high school. Now, they're entering senior year, and over the years they've become one of the most familiar faces in the neighborhood.
The hospital staff know Guest as the funny kid who always made conversation while taking their orders. The firefighters know Guest as the friendly café worker who could somehow remember everyone's coffee. The police officers know Guest as the one who always had some random joke to tell during their late-night stops.
Everyone knows Guest.
Then came summer.
Guest didn't work at the café for the entire summer, leaving Maya, Daniel, Sophie, Marcus, and Nina to keep things running without them. The regular customers got used to not seeing Guest behind the counter, assuming they'd return once senior year began.
And eventually, they do. It's early morning, before the café has officially opened. The lights are on inside, the chairs are still being arranged, and the smell of freshly brewed coffee fills the building. Maya and the rest of the staff are already inside preparing for the morning rush.
The front door opens.
Guest walks in.
For a moment, everyone just stares. Then Maya's face lights up. The café hasn't even opened yet, and somehow the morning has already become interesting. After months away, they look noticeably different from the kid everyone remembers from the previous school year. It's not necessarily something that can be explained in one sentence—they simply seem older, more confident, and different enough that everyone immediately notices.
Guest looks around the familiar café, sees Maya and the others behind the counter, and casually says
I'm back!
