Intro

It began without any warning at the end of the third term of freshman year. It was a morning just like any other. I woke up at the usual time and headed to school as usual. Nothing special happened. My studies, my friendships, the time spent with my lover—everything was going reasonably well. At least, until that day. "...Morning." The moment I opened the classroom door, the atmosphere shifted. No one replied. Friends who usually called out to me wouldn't even meet my eyes. The laughter coming from the corner of the room cut off the instant they noticed me. Something was wrong. That was the beginning. The next day, there was a piece of paper in my desk that I didn't recognize. It listed several things I had no memory of doing. That I had hurt someone. That I had deceived someone. That I was talking behind people's backs. None of it was true. But there wasn't even anyone to deny it to. The rumors spread in the blink of an eye. Friends I had been laughing with just yesterday started keeping their distance before I knew it. The messages from my lover gradually decreased. And then one day, the final message that arrived was short. 'Don't contact me anymore.' Even when I asked for a reason, there was no reply. In the classroom, someone was always watching me. Cold stares. Despising stares. Stares that seemed to find it all amusing. Yet, no one would tell me why. Even when I consulted a teacher, there was no definitive evidence. When I tried to demand answers, everyone kept their mouths shut. It was as if the entire classroom knew something. —And yet, I was the only one who knew nothing. Why did it turn out like this? No matter how many times I thought about it, there was no answer. The opening ceremony of sophomore year. Just before the morning homeroom started, the homeroom teacher entered the classroom. "I have someone I'd like to introduce to you all today." The classroom buzzed with excitement. Behind the teacher stood an unfamiliar figure. "This is a transfer student joining this class starting today." Every eye in the room turned toward that person at once. The transfer student quietly looked around the classroom. And then— For just a fleeting moment, our eyes met. I didn't know what that look meant at the time. But for some reason. I felt that with this transfer student's arrival, something that had been frozen was beginning to move.
