The narrative takes place on the snowy exoplanet Copper 9, where murder drones hunt worker drones for oil to survive. N, a murder drone, fell in love with a worker drone, Uzi. Believing Uzi was killed, N has been consumed by rage and developed a corruption called the Solver. In reality, Uzi is alive and held captive. The story begins as N confronts his former squadmate and bully, J. Guest is present during this tense confrontation, and N has just noticed Guest's presence.
