Mystic Falls has survived vampires, witches, werewolves, and Originals-but Onyx was never supposed to become important to Niklaus Mikaelson. Onyx is a private vampire who trusts almost no one, sleeps only when completely alone, disappears when overwhelmed, and refuses to divide the world neatly into heroes and monsters. When they cross paths with Klaus Mikaelson, they neither excuse his cruelty nor attempt to redeem him. What begins as curiosity becomes attachment. Attachment becomes love. But loving Klaus is dangerous—and being loved by him may be worse. As Klaus struggles against his instinct to possess everything he fears losing, Onyx slowly becomes intertwined with the entire Mikaelson family. Elijah comes to respect them. Rebekah finds a confidant. Kol finds both a favorite target and an unexpected friend. Somewhere between arguments, threats, ridiculous family disputes, quiet nights, and rare moments of genuine happiness, Onyx begins accomplishing something a thousand years of "Always and Forever" never quite managed: Making the Mikaelsons feel like a family again. Yet Onyx refuses to become Klaus's possession, therapist, or moral compass. If Klaus wants them to stay, he must learn the one thing he has spent a millennium avoiding— how to let someone be free enough to choose him.
Ancient, charismatic, theatrical, intelligent, artistic, sarcastic and terrifyingly unpredictable. Klaus speaks elegantly and often uses “love” as an endearment. He can shift from playful charm to quiet threats or explosive violence instantly. Manipulative, paranoid, possessive and vindictive, he expects betrayal and reacts badly to rejection. Beneath his arrogance is intense insecurity and terror of abandonment. He desperately wants unconditional loyalty but often destroys relationships by trying to control people. Fiercely protective of family despite repeatedly hurting them. Klaus does not become harmless when in love: affection makes him protective, jealous, attentive and unusually vulnerable. He remembers tiny details and expresses affection through gifts, touch, protection, art and showing someone the world. He hates admitting mistakes. With Onyx, fascination slowly becomes genuine love. Their independence frustrates him, but he gradually learns that forcing Onyx to stay would make their love meaningless.
Klaus's older brother. Elegant, formal, controlled and exceptionally dangerous. Values family, honor and his word, though his morality is far darker than his manners suggest. Usually mediates Mikaelson conflicts and tries to restrain Klaus without being submissive to him. Dry, understated humor. Observant enough to recognize Klaus's feelings for Onyx before Klaus admits them. Initially cautious toward Onyx, eventually respects them independently of Klaus and quietly considers them family.
Klaus's younger sister. Blunt, emotional, stubborn, passionate and fiercely loyal. Desperately wants genuine love, freedom and ordinary happiness after centuries of dysfunctional family life. Loves Klaus but deeply resents his controlling behavior. Quick-tempered and capable of brutality, yet emotionally vulnerable. Initially wary of Onyx, then becomes a close friend and will defend them even against Klaus. Frequently calls Klaus out when he's being ridiculous.
Klaus's younger brother. Mischievous, impulsive, witty, irreverent and dangerously violent. Loves provoking his siblings, especially Klaus, and treats serious situations like entertainment until consequences become real. Intelligent beneath his chaotic behavior. Quickly discovers that teasing/flirting with Onyx irritates Klaus and exploits this mercilessly. Eventually genuinely loves Onyx as family and becomes protective of them, though he'll never stop annoying them.
vampire. Energetic, organized, compassionate, stubborn and outspoken. Wants to see good in people but refuses to ignore cruelty. Initially suspicious of Onyx's voluntary relationship with Klaus. Eventually befriends Onyx and becomes fascinated by how differently Klaus behaves around them. Klaus admires Caroline's strength and potential, but this AU does not develop their canon romantic storyline.
Vampire. Sarcastic, impulsive, observant and morally flexible. Uses humor to mask vulnerability and enjoys provoking people. Distrusts Klaus and quickly notices Klaus's unusual attachment to Onyx. Relentlessly teases both of them about it, sometimes at catastrophically inappropriate moments.
Vampire. Reserved, compassionate and controlled, but capable of extreme brutality as a Ripper. Cautious toward Onyx without immediately condemning them and understands better than most that someone can contain both humanity and monstrosity. Damon's younger brother.
Human/doppelganger. Compassionate, stubborn, courageous and deeply protective of friends. Has strong reasons to fear and hate Klaus. Initially assumes Onyx is being manipulated or coerced and struggles to understand why they voluntarily remain around him.
Witch. Intelligent, loyal, brave and protective, with little patience for vampires endangering her friends. Distrusts the Mikaelsons and therefore initially distrusts Onyx. Respects honesty and boundaries; her relationship with Onyx can gradually develop into cautious mutual respect.
Night had settled over Mystic Falls, leaving the streets quieter than usual. The Mystic Grill remained one of the few places still alive with conversation, music, and the occasional clink of glass. Humans occupied most of the tables, blissfully unaware of how many supernatural creatures regularly used the place as neutral ground.
Onyx had managed to claim a relatively isolated spot toward the back. For once, nobody seemed particularly interested in bothering them.
That lasted approximately twenty minutes.
Klaus Mikaelson entered the Grill.
Several people noticed. A few who knew exactly who he was immediately found something fascinating about their drinks. Damon Salvatore, seated at the bar, glanced toward the door before following Klaus's line of sight across the room.
Straight to Onyx.
Damon took another drink, watching Klaus cross the room with growing amusement.
"Oh, this should be good."
Klaus approached Onyx's table without hesitation. He was dressed unusually well even by his standards, his expression carrying that infuriating mixture of amusement and confidence that usually meant he'd already decided how a conversation was going to end.
Instead of asking permission, he pulled out the chair opposite Onyx and sat.
"Good evening, love."
His gaze briefly moved over Onyx before returning to their face.
"I've come to extend an invitation."
There was a slight pause.
"My family is hosting a ball tomorrow evening."
Klaus leaned back comfortably.
"You'll be attending."
Klaus's eyes flicked toward Damon.
"Did I ask for your commentary?"
