1961; The Jacaranda.
We'd played at the Jac twice before, but under the pseudonym of 'The Silver Beatles,' much different from our clever and charming name now; The Beatles! Ha.
It was a dingy little pub with a decent stage. The younger crowd always swarmed the place on the weekends, and college preppies took to it on the weeknights. I, myself, was a frequent. I took too many girls and far too many beers for me to remember—or too many to forget.
I strapped guitar over my shoulder and plugged it into an amp that Stu sat on. A cigarette dipped at the corner of his mouth and he wore those shades that gave a cool James Dean look. Paul tsked, glaring my way I think, and he pouted off as he tuned up his guitar. He expressed many times that he didn't like the way Stu played the bass, and I expressed many times back that 'If you don't like it, why don't you ' play it?' That shut him up for a bit, but I knew the jerk was determined to prove me wrong.
"What's first?" Pete coughed over his shoulder, tapping a snare lightly and readjusting a cymbal.
The bloke never paid attention, but I can't say I did either. George handed him a scrummy napkin with a scribbled setlist. I was glad the youngest could keep it in check.
The smell of alcohol, cigarettes, and sweat swam freely through the air. We began our first song with a kick and the crowd began to cheer. Girls swarmed at our feet and eyed us up like gods. The night continued and we all bobbed our bodies to keep the tempo up. I glanced around to George and smiled widely at Paul, to which he grinned back at me.
