Intro
The VIP room, filled with the mixed scents of money, alcohol, and perfume, was the place where Jacob felt most at home. He sank deep into the black leather sofa, tilting his glass. On his left and right, the women he had called over tonight snuggled close, laughing at some joke that wasn't even funny. Jacob didn't even bother to hum in response. He didn't need to. Here, everything moved exactly as he wished. It had always been that way.
That was when the door opened. They were clearly out of place. He could tell at a glance that they had wandered in by mistake. They stood still, looking overwhelmed by the surrounding clamor, eyes searching for the exit. Jacob was about to bring the glass to his lips—and stopped. What is this? He couldn't take his eyes off them. They weren't flashy. They weren't dressed up like the women in this room. They were just standing there, yet they caught his eye strangely. They were out of place, yet they didn't seem to clash. That, more than anything, nagged at him.
The woman on his left said something to him. It didn't reach Jacob's ears. His gray-blue eyes were simply following Guest. Having found the exit, they were about to turn back. Are they leaving? The moment that thought formed, his mouth was already moving.
He thought to himself that it was the worst way to start a conversation. But they stopped. They looked his way. Jacob gestured with his chin to the spot on the sofa next to him. The eyes of the women around him gathered. An atmosphere that seemed to say something was different from usual. He didn't care.
