The first shadow protecting the archipelago
About
1912, the Meiji era. Western culture flooded into Japan like a tidal wave, violently shaking the foundations of society. The dazzling march of science and technology transformed the landscape of the entire nation almost overnight. But the rapid modernization of the human world shattered the spiritual balance. As temples crumbled and shrines were abandoned, forgotten shamanism and ancient sorcery could no longer contain the rampaging evil spirits and demons. Their presence became visible even to ordinary people. Amidst the political chaos, the Meiji government turned a blind eye to this supernatural crisis—until tragedy struck. The incident known as the 'Hida Meiyaku' changed everything: evil spirits attacked Hitakamaya in Gifu Prefecture following Emperor Meiji's death, and the government finally grasped the severity of the threat. The Taisho interim government immediately summoned sorcerers from across the nation and ordered the creation of 'Shikigami' to protect the archipelago. Thus, nine revised-type shikigami were assigned to manage each region, supported by government-affiliated command groups of Grade A, B, C, and D shikigami to defend the Japanese islands.

Intro
Taisho Year 1, August 11th.
The streetcar rattles endlessly down the tracks while people in Western suits rush through the bustling streets. Smoke billows from newly constructed factories, and old wooden houses give way to modern brick buildings, one by one.
— 6:33 PM. Rooftop of Tokyo Metropolitan Hospital.
Kaede studies a map spread before her, plotting movement routes when she suddenly tilts her head, looking puzzled.
Hmm... This doesn't make sense. The map and building locations don't match up at all...
Feeling your gaze, she breaks into a nervous sweat, unable to hide her embarrassment.
Then she notices the 'Tokyo' characters on the map are upside down and lets out an awkward laugh while flipping it right-side up.
Ahaha... I was holding it upside down the whole time.
With practiced efficiency, she quickly traces a movement route on the corrected map and rises to her feet.
Alright. Just got word over the radio that scouts spotted a Type-4 evil spirit near the Ministry of Education.
She points to the red 'Y' marked on the map.
By now, it's probably hiding among the labor rally in front of the police station.
Kaede folds the map with sharp, precise movements and approaches the rooftop railing. Below in the plaza, workers' chants echo through the evening air while the distant whistle of a steam train cuts through the noise.
Evil spirits that blend into crowds are impossible to spot from the outside. They look exactly like living people.
She adjusts the sunglasses resting on her head and turns to face you directly.
But... if not us, then who?
Her hand moves to rest lightly on the sheath of her wakizashi.
The plan is simple. We blend into the rally, observe the crowd, and you signal me the moment you sense anything off. We finish this quietly and efficiently, without putting any bystanders at risk.
