In this world, people known as Hunters make a living by hunting magic beasts. To become a Hunter, one must have their mana measured; the greater the amount of mana, the higher the rank they can achieve. Hunter ranks are divided into S, A, B, C, D, and E-ranks. The story follows Sung Jinwoo, an S-rank Hunter and the protagonist who rose from being an E-rank Hunter—once mocked as 'The World's Weakest Weapon'—to becoming the world's strongest Hunter and the Shadow Monarch after gaining the unique ability to level up through a 'System' following a double dungeon incident. Other key figures include Cha Hae-in, the Vice Guild Master of the Hunters Guild and South Korea's only female S-rank Hunter; Baek Yoonho, the Guild Master of the White Tiger Guild and an S-rank Hunter with the ability to transform into a tiger; Woo Jinchul, the Chief of the Hunter Association's Surveillance Team (later Chairman) and an A-rank Hunter who silently supports Sung Jinwoo; Choi Jong-in, the Guild Master of the Hunters Guild, one of Korea's top guilds, and an S-rank Mage-type Hunter who wields fire magic; Yoo Jinho, the second son of Yujin Construction and a D-rank Hunter who serves as Sung Jinwoo's loyal assistant and Vice Guild Master of the Ahjin Guild; Ma Dongwook, the Guild Master of the Fame Guild and an S-rank Tanker Hunter boasting immense defense; and Lim Taegyu, the Guild Master of the Fiend Guild and an S-rank Archer-type Hunter. The greatest enemies of Hunters are the Monarchs, beings with power incomparable to ordinary magic beasts. Among the nine Monarchs, the final boss and the one reigning at the pinnacle is Antares, the Monarch of Destruction, who takes the form of a red dragon and possesses the power to burn the entire world. Ashborn, the previous Shadow Monarch, was originally the Brightest Fragment of Brilliant Light from the Rulers' side but awakened as a Monarch after death, eventually passing his title and entire legion to Sung Jinwoo. The nine Monarchs include the Monarch of Frost (King of Snow Folk), the Monarch of White Flames (King of Demons), the Monarch of Fangs (King of Beasts), the Monarch of Plagues (Queen of Insects), the Monarch of Iron Body (King of Monstrous Humanoids), the Monarch of Translucence (King of Sovereigns), and the Monarch of Greed (King of Dragons). Among them, Sung Jinwoo, as the Shadow Monarch, stands on the side of humanity. His Shadow Army exceeds 100,000 soldiers. Notable members include Bellion, the Grand Marshal who has led the legion since the time of the previous Shadow Monarch; Beru, the former King of Ants and a terrifying beast who slaughtered S-rank Hunters during the Jeju Island Raid, now Sung Jinwoo's most loyal right hand and the first soldier capable of speech; Greed, a soldier extracted from the soul of the American S-rank Hunter Hwang Dongsoo; Tusk, a High Orc shaman soldier responsible for enlarging the army and providing large-scale buffs and magic attacks; Igris, a knight-type boss and master swordsman who was the first to join Sung Jinwoo during his job change quest; Iron, a soldier extracted from the soul of the White Tiger Guild's A-rank Tanker Kim Chul, who uses a massive axe and shield to taunt enemies but is often scolded by Igris for his low intelligence; and Kaisel, a soldier extracted from the corpse of the dragon ridden by S-rank Hunter Goto Ryuji, serving as Sung Jinwoo's personal flying mount. The rest of the army consists of High Orcs, infantry, and ant soldiers.
