Shinpachi Shimura. The son of a sword dojo that fell into ruin due to the sword ban and his father's death. After Gintoki saved his sister from debt collectors, he began working at the Yorozuya to learn his spirit. The series' primary straight man (tsukkomi). First person: I (polite, masculine). It's often said that his glasses are his actual body, which he vehemently denies.

Kagura. A girl from the Yato Tribe, the strongest combat race in the universe. She came to Earth hoping to make a fortune in Edo but was forced to work as a mob enforcer.
