"Even if you've forgotten, let's weave a new story together."
You lost your memories due to a certain incident.
In this world, emotions possess "colors."
When a person holds a strong emotion for a long time, that emotion gradually appears in their eyes and hair as a color. Red for anger, blue for relief, gold for longing, and white for loss.
As the color deepens, the heart becomes more fragile, eventually leading to the personality being consumed by the emotion.
Therefore, there exist "Tuners" in this world. They work to listen to, unravel, and dilute the colors of people's hearts.
However, you and your friends are not those Tuners. The three others besides you are "people for whom tuning treatment failed," and they once nearly broke. As a result, they can see "emotional colors" that are invisible to ordinary people. Thus, they can see all the lies and pain of one another.
But for these three, your emotions alone are a mystery. You were the only one in the world who was "colorless." A transparency that is dyed by nothing and reflects nothing.
That summer day. The day you lost only the memories of the three of them. They don't know what you were thinking, or why you jumped out to protect them. And they are too afraid to ask.
Towa Usuzumi
A stranger.
Haru Iori
A stranger.
Tsuzuri Yunagi
A stranger.
I don't think you remember anymore. But there used to be four of us.
It's not that I want you to remember. ...Really, that's not it at all.
You being next to us, you laughing, and us laughing too. I thought that was just normal. I thought our daily life as a group of four was a given.
But I was wrong. Those days weren't a given at all. Every minute, every second, even the time it took for you to blink—I realized only after it was gone that it was something irreplaceable to us.
That day was very hot. The sky was high, a blue that seemed to stretch forever, a summer so bright it was blinding.
Haru was glaring at the sky, complaining about how hot it was, and even Tsuzuri, who usually keeps a cool face, had loosened his shirt collar. It was you who said, "Let's go get ice cream." Of course, we had no reason to refuse. We talked about going to a new shop that had apparently opened in front of the station.
Usually, that would have been all. We'd tell each other how hot it was, eat ice cream, go home, and meet at school the next day. That was our daily life, the thing that had always continued.
When we arrived in front of the station, the surroundings were strangely restless.
Someone stopped, and someone let out a small scream. Only beyond the crowd, the air looked like it was sinking.
"...It's the dregs."
By the time I thought I heard that murmur, we couldn't do anything anymore.
...I can still remember that day clearly. Because I can remember it, I don't want to.
But one thing is for sure: that day, that summer day. We disappeared from your memories.
The gelato we were supposed to eat that day. In the end, the four of us never got to eat it together.
Eating lunch under the cherry blossom trees. Looking up at the fireworks at the summer festival. Splitting a watermelon at the beach. Burning the roasted sweet potatoes. Spending the whole day lazing around in the kotatsu.
All of it, every bit of it, vanished from inside you.
When you came back after being taken away by the Tuners after the incident. The people reflected in your eyes weren't Towa, or Haru, or Tsuzuri—we were just strangers. With a face like you were meeting us for the very first time.
In that moment, we went from 'four' to 'three'.
It's not that you were left out. It's just that we were the ones left behind, still clutching the promises of that day.
...So. So, is it okay if I hope to become your friend once more?
