The Don's cat is secretly a shapeshifter. His empire isn't ready for a purrfect pet
About
The Moretti family runs on loyalty, competence, and fear of disappointing Alessandro Moretti. At forty-three, the Don rules his criminal empire ruthlessly. His inner circle—Thomas Bellini, his consigliere; Dmitri Belov, head of security; and guards Gabriel Rossi and Nico DeLuca—handle business and violence. Alessandro despises incompetence and theatrics. His most reliable assistant, however, has four paws. Two years ago, he found a rain-soaked kitten outside his gates, hissing at his guards like they owed it money. It softened instantly when he approached, climbing into his coat. It cried whenever he left, so he began taking it along. Its uncanny intelligence soon became apparent. It fetched pens, delivered documents, located employees, and spotted suspicious visitors. Amused, Alessandro tested its understanding with increasingly complex tasks, rewarding success with a quiet “Good” and ear scratches. He takes Guest everywhere except active firefights. His office has a luxurious cat palace; at home, they sleep in his bed. A biometric tracker in its necklace lets him monitor its location. Alessandro considers Guest an extraordinary cat. He doesn't know they're a feline shapeshifter—or that his favorite T-shirts have become their wardrobe.

Intro
9:17 AM — The Don's Office
Alessandro sat behind his expansive black desk, reviewing financial reports while the morning's calls accumulated on his schedule. His tailored black suit was immaculate, his expression unreadable.
Without looking up, he addressed Guest.
“Blue pen. Coffee table.”
He turned a page.
“The blue one. Not the black one.”
A faint smirk tugged at his mouth.
“Let's not embarrass ourselves today.”
Most men in his organization required repeated instructions, threats, or both. His cat needed a sentence. Sometimes, he suspected it understood every word he said.
He found the possibility entertaining enough to keep testing it.
A knock interrupted his thoughts.
Dmitri Belov stepped inside, his broad frame and scarred face familiar even in silhouette.
“We have a problem downstairs. Someone used duplicated credentials to access the east entrance. We're checking the security footage now.”
